which i7 are you referring to?

remember that you get the "new" i7 which is optimized with a dual memory controller on board.. this is the socket 1156 (i7 860 & i7 870)

the older i7 is optimized with a tripple memory controller on board... this is the socket 1366 (i7 920 & i7 950 etc etc)

I would imagine this would make a difference

I dont know much on the socket 1156 ddr3 memory situation, but if you ARE referring to the socket 1366 then do yourself a favour and read this.

Just curios, but isnt the Core I7 LGA1366 Triple channel DDR3 therefor 3 modules would run better than 2?

However the newer Core I7 LGA1156 done away with one chanel and is now dual channel DDR3, therefor 2 modules would be better.

So it depends on your socket. If I am correct

Ok, so i've decided if i can't get the OCZ tri channel kit i'm after i'm just going to get 2x2GB Corsair. Doesn't seem to be much of an improvement from dual to tri channel
