40mb ADSL

Why do we want to shorten the local loop before we upgrade the exchanges and their backhaul bandwidth ?

If this Mith's ADSL line syncs at 25mbps down, even an ADSL line which is further away should be able to sync at 10 - 15mbps.

I would say enable an interim upgrade before trying to catch up to 1st world standards.

Don't try to run before you can walk. Nobody is expecting to be on the level of US or EU broadband, telkom cannot keep up with the pace of their development for good reasons. All most people are asking is some form of upgrade, instead of years of empty promises.

It has been said many times before, the cost to deply the MSANs is much cheaper and recently when they showed off the tech, they (the techs) can monitor your SNR values remotely to troubleshoot which i am excited about (for those non-technical folks). I would rather have a choice of speed profiles upto 40Mbps than be stuck at sub 10Mbps. Am no expert so feel free to slam me down :p.

First off who said they are not upgrading the back haul ??
AFAIK ME is being rolled out .

Got a call from Telkom yesterday asking me to dial 10210 and ask for new services
After speaking to new services was told that someone would have to call me back but the lady confirmed that my exchange is 20MB enabled.Found that strange considering it does not form part of the trial?

Me too.

I wonder if the current 10mb exchanges will be given the 20mb sync profile, seeing as ADSL2+ can reach up to 24mb. It would make a lot of sense - hell, my attainable rate is about 19mb. I want to be able to use it :P

And I'm talking about shortening the local loop, which is a ****load more work, and will take much longer, than just replacing an old DSLAM with an MSAN inside an exchange.
I don't think you know what you're talking about

They are not just putting MSANs in the street. AFIK they are also putting them in the exchanges and street IMAXs are being installed.

Do you ?

If not, what is your point ?

If yes, how about informing me ?
Well do you understand the concept of being close to the exchange and getting good ADSL speeds ??
Well they are bringing the exchange closer to the customer that is the point of MSANs.

Pretty sure I do.

The attainable speed on my current ADSL line is over 20mbps already with its current stats, I am 1km away from the exchange by road and 740m in a straight line. Me and a whole lot of other premises in a densely populated suburb, the same range and nearer. So why don't they just replace the rustbucket DSLAM in my exchange with an MSAN ?

As you will notice by a few people posting on MBB they are rolling out ME and it is alleviating the band width problem on the DSLAMs .
A DSLAM whether old or new will work properly if the back bone is sufficient, which they are doing by rolling out metro Ethernet.

Do you think they will allow us to sync at higher ADSL 2+ speeds?

If I am already syncing at 10mb, surely the extremely large ME backbone could handle faster speeds? My max attainable is 19mb on my current router.
AFIK the new IMAX DSLAMs can handle 20 meg whether they will release that i dont know.

My exchange is already connected with metro-e, since some people on it are running 10mbps. That and our huge congestion issues were resolved literally overnight after it was bogged down for 3 months. Right after that I also heard that in all likelihood the DSLAM that my line is connected to does not support 10mbps. My line is against the 4mbps ceiling, downloads between 400 - 430 KB/sec.

Still waiting to hear if grav80 can shed some light ?
