I applied for 40mb adsl on that application form that Telkom had on their website a few weeks ago.

Just got a phone call from Telkom. The lady said that in order to get 40mb adsl, I need to phone 10210, select option 1 and talk to an agent and ask to be speed dialed to 640. Tried this and I got a "the extension doesn't exist" from the automated voice.

I find this weird as I saw the list of exchanges that were going to be used for the trial and mine wasn't one of them. However I put my telephone number in the application form so Telkom should be able to see which exchange I'm connected to.

Maybe I should phone back and speak to an agent and try my luck?

Also posted earlier about this. The agent told me to phone 10210 to find out what's available in my area, it was quite clear that I'm outside the trial areas, so didn't bother phoning.

I also got a call like that but was successful in testing my number 021 685 xxxx on the Rondebosch exchange, they confirmed it supports 40mbps only requirement was to have your line with Telkom.
I requested my line to be transferred to Telkom over a month ago from WebAfrica but their support staff are so useless they couldn't organize a piss up in a brewery so basically I have to wait another month or pay double because they stuffed up

just got my line upgraded.

down up
Attenuation (0.1 dB): 95 32
Output Power (0.1 dBm): 114 122
Rate (Kbps): 25599 1183

just did an international speedtest through my broadband:

Test conducted on Sat Sep 08 2012 18:19:07 GMT+0200 (South Africa Standard Time)

Download Speed: 22551 kbps (2818.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 913 kbps (114.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 215 ms

did a test on speedtest.net as well:

Quick question - does it cost more than the 4/10 meg ADSL fee?

@mith, thanks for the feedback, that is some sick speed :D, enjoy :) and keep us posted as things progress please.

thanks guys...loving the new speed..:D
will keep this thread updated if I encounter any issues

just download a 3.1gb 'software update' in 20 min 33 seconds...wohooo

40Mbps is still slow in comparison with the connections that students has in the University hostels ! There you get actual 100Mbps up + down, and some of the computer user areas has 1Gbps connections :D

Anyway, I really won't mind having a 40Mbps ADSL/VSDL connection for the same price of a 4-10Mbps ADSL connection.

Someone explain why our upload ratio is so horrible compared to non-tribal civilizations?

Woaaaaahhh... U lucky, my man.

Mith, can you confirm if you are with Telkom for Bandwidth data as well. Either way, what product are you one (uncapped?). Got a call today and they say I will be elligable in 2 weeks but locked in with MWeb till end October due to 1 month cancellation notice.

oh..just replied to your pm...
I am with telkom for data as well. Am on the do broadband premium account.

So this also means that what I have been nagging on about is not too far from the truth : That our local copper to the exchange does allow for some very decent speeds.

So why does telkom not upgrade exchange equipment and backhaul capacity before they commit everything to deploying MSAN's ? 15 - 20mbps down and 1mbps up would keep me quite happy for the next 2 - 3 years while they roll out a decent broadband fibre infrastructure.

They want to run before they walk it seems.

The whole object of the MSANs exercise is to shorten the copper so you get better SNR and Attenuation Rates .
Obviously if you are close to the exchange you will get better speeds.
SNR and Attenuation Rates control what speeds are attainable on ADSL.
So putting a MSAN close to the subscriber does the trick.

Why do we want to shorten the local loop before we upgrade the exchanges and their backhaul bandwidth ?

If this Mith's ADSL line syncs at 25mbps down, even an ADSL line which is further away should be able to sync at 10 - 15mbps.

I would say enable an interim upgrade before trying to catch up to 1st world standards.

Don't try to run before you can walk. Nobody is expecting to be on the level of US or EU broadband, telkom cannot keep up with the pace of their development for good reasons. All most people are asking is some form of upgrade, instead of years of empty promises.
