40Mbps uncapped DSL guaranteed for SA

I'd like to see how they do that on my line that only syncs at a max of 3Mbps.

careful, my line used to support 3-4mb just fine.. Then telkom decided to "upgrade" my exchange to support 10mb. Can bearly hold a stable 1mb now as my SNR margins have gone so low. I'd hate for them to try "upgrade" my exchange again...

Exactly! My exchange supports 10mbps yet I sync at a max of 5mbps. For 20/40mbps you would need to live next door to your exchange...

Good to hear we will be getting uncapped 40mbps DSL. Other ISP's should be allowed to trial, even if Telkom charges them some money to trial.

While i do take my hat off for the iSPs to be wanting to offer this, i only ask one requirement from them. PLEASE be transparent with your threshold limits as we know, there is no way on earth YOU will offer this with no threshold limit so we ask that you tell us before we accept that AUP of yours.

Just thinking about it now, i should also mention, get some devs to make a tool for your current/future customers to calculate their speed using their SNR values, there are many who do not have this knowledge yet and the more you teach us, the better the chances of getting new clients with the above also included :).

I cannot wait until this happens :D.

At the current rate of progress (384kbs is still called fast internet) I doubt that we will see affordable 40mb uncapped in this lifetime in South Afrca.

Did you miss the bit where they're upgrading everyone to 1mbit? That's a 300% increase just about. They're also rolling out MSANs so they can actually provide people with reliable, fast Internet. Personally I think Telkom deserves a pat on the back. They have a lot of ground to catch up on but it seems as if they're making a solid effort.

I can't get above 3.7MB telkom says I am in a umc box or something like that and it can't go above 4mb. I just wish telkom would sort these type of problems out before going to 40mb.

How are they gonna price 20 and 40 mbit uncapped.
As it is 4mbit costs over R1000 pm (line+adsl+isp).
If they simply make new price brackets above the current ones then it will suck for most of us.
If they bring down the prices of 1,2,4 and 10 mbit then that will be great for everyone.

If you read some of the posts regarding costs in the previous threads by MickeyD and others, Telkom as you know is installing MSANs and these offer much more capacity & are cheaper to deploy than DSLAMs however we cannot compare pricing now as the rollout is still in it's infancy stage.

One thing is for certain, pricing will come down, the question remains by how much?

hey all you clowns complaining about crap adsl speeds... VDSL != ADSL

This!

No one understands the idea behind it. Current ADSL prices are high due to low capacity. High demand + low stock = even higher prices. Why do you think that the 10mb upgrades were free? It was because the metro ethernet capacity allowed for it price wise and technically.

VDSL will be the same - probably not too different from current prices but for much more speed.

The min speed they should be offering is 4Mbps. 1Mbps is a joke!

The US just passed the 6Mbps as average connection speed mark according to Akamai, and large portions of the US are stuck with speeds well under that mark. You also can't compare us to the UK or any of the Scandinavian countries because they have far higher population densities. Be realistic with your expectations of a third world country. 40Mbps is pretty damn good.

Speeds aren't the issue here. Rather ask the question: "Who can afford 40Mbps uncapped?" because I sure as hell can't, I'll tell you that much. It's pointless having massive speeds if you can't make use of it.

Also, regarding your 3Mbps connection speed issue. Telkom installing MSANs should improve your line quality, meaning that you should be getting far better performance once you've been upgraded.

Lets hope so. I can't wait for it to be implemented then and we will see.

That's because Vaseline is so much cheaper in good old SA.
