I just had my 4Mb line activated yesterday after moving house. It was working fine yesterday but tonight it keeps losing sync every few seconds.

Advice?

Anything I can check/try out myself before calling Telkom?

drop the speed to 1 or 2mb , i had this problem , i did this and no more disconnects , my line never loses sync now unless i reset the modem

Apart from doing that, what else could be causing the problem?

The line was fine yesterday so why would the sync loss problem only start now?

I have had the same issue for the last week with my 4 meg line, was fine before then for months, Telkom is apparently investigating

Possibly noise on the line or something from some telkom fool fiddling around at the DSLam.
Post yout att. and SNR readings

Good/bad?

"US Margin 6
DS Margin 3"

And therein lies your problem. With such low SNR's your line is bound to drop all the time at the slightest noise spike. Try disconnecting all your other phone line equipment and see if that helps but ask telkom to check your port at the exchange out as well.

I wish someone from Telkom would explain this stupid pricing table:
Fast DSL - only R152.00 p/m
(based on 384kbps technology) <-- What I currently got :-(

Faster DSL - only R326.00 p/m
(based on 512kbps technology) <-- WTF, more than Double the price for only 33% extra? PATHETIC!!! Should be around R180-R190 looking at the other pricing/bandwidth ratios, right?

Where's a 1Mbit option??? I'd pay R220 for that, looking at the other pricing... and ignoring all cheap overseas pricing...

Where's a 2Mbit option???

Fastest DSL - only R413.00 p/m
(based on 4096kbps technology) <-- Ok, 8 x the 512kb bandwidth, for only R87 more....
What's the catch? Oh yeah, not available everywhere, and when it is available you get
out of sync issues!!! Come ON Telkom!!!

I am sohappy to see the Neotel chaps rolling out fibre everywhere, as soon as I can switch, I WILL!

you pay for 4mb line and if you cant get it they sync you to the closest but you are paying for the 4mb because you want 4mb so they charge you for it and give you what you can get

Sorry. Opening a "old" post.

We have similar problems at work. It would constnatly drop the whole day. Telkom tried diff profiles. A 1meg profiles does not even sync. A 2meg profile was stable for months until recently.
While typing this reply the line dropped twice. A second and 3rd status report was posted below.

Reported to Telkom. They will test the line.

I had the same problem and Telkom dropped my speed to 2meg, no more disconnects now.

The 4meg connection worked fine for a week or two (only occassionaly losing sync), but then it wouldn't sync at all.

Has been stable since, but i'd like to get back to a stable 4meg connection if possible.

Maybe you're a bit far from the exchange and that's why you are not constantly getting fullspeed?
I had to downgrade to 3Mb to get a stable connection but I'll upgrade again if I get a Netgear router. I heard other routers help with keeping the connection alive.

Mines also been losing sync as of recent. Maybe I should downgrade like others have been suggesting. I thought it just might be a Telkom issue.

Techie was here 2 minutes ago. He says the lines are faulty and he says the cable is to long. The cable section will come out, tomorrow, to replace the 50 pair cable running into our building.
Let's hope this will sort it out.

I'm using a Netgear router and still lose sync @4meg.

Will try contacting Telkom (*gulp*:() ), try and explain my situation to them (no matter how many calls it takes to find a competent tech.), to get it looked at.
