It really seems like it's gonna be a petrol guzzler with a 3.6L petrol engine, which is the only one in the price range.

It is a really beautiful car though. Top Gear's wild card recommendation actually says, and I quote "The Hyundai Santa Fe is as refined as the Grand Cherokee at a fraction of the cost" and that leaves me leaning back towards it...

I have some concerns about the Germans. The X5 is hellishly expensive, and the Q5, well, if anything goes wrong (like the suspension in the Disco) you cough up a small fortune to have it fixed...

Having a look now, and the Q5 within the price range is the 2.0L TDI S Quattro, and it just looks a little underpowered at 130KW and 380Nm torque. The gadgets look impressive, although they're all bloody optional extras inevitably making the price horrendous...

I hear you, but at least give the Diesel a chance. Go for a test drive and hear about discounts or demos. I bought a smaller demo Jeep and I'm hooked on the brand now. Service has also been great.
 
Not liking the bakkie (Fortuner) models, you can also look at the Prado (TX) at 20k more than 600k, which is in my opinion an excellent car, the VX range is 100k more than the TX range. My brother owns the Grand Cherokee, very good looking, but their Canadian model have subtle changes in looks when compared to our model.

Kia Sorento? Don't know it well but somehow I lean towards the Sorento over the Santa Fe.

Maybe ignorance, dunno.

Also, manual might be better if towing - some auto boxes don't do towing well I believe.
 
Geez 7 seater 4x4's have got pricey (I suppose so has everything else).

The Sante Fe looks like a great buy for the price, looks good inside and out. Reviews say the 4x4 system is good but is let down by ground clearance so if you going to go bundu bashing go elsewhere but be prepared to pay at least R100k more.

Auto-box is a must.

Saw the Sorento and the clearance is tiny, hence why it and the Honda CRV are out of the question as well...
 
I have the Chevrolet Captiva and will trade up for either the Trailblazer or Jeep if i were you and considering 7 seats. I looked at the Santa Fe but the 7 seaters weren't is SA yet, good looking car but not very capable off-road.

For me the Jeep wins, also look at the Evoque if you're willing to give Land Rover another chance. Still not sure why you need diff-lock.

Clearance is better than some of the others in the same price bracket. The best clearance is the Trailblazer at 195 if memory serves correct. Santa Fe is 185...

BTW, where did you find the quoted 8.6L fuel efficiency spec? I can't find it on their site...

Santa Fe is disappointing in that the top of the range costs R525k and still no freeway plan.
