I won this Cell C 21 Mbps HSPA+ dongle & 60GB of data.

It arrived today and it doesn't seem to be working.

I am a complete noob when it comes to this, so I may be doing something wrong.

It seems I can connect to the CellC site, but any other site times out.

The light is blue when connected, what's the difference between 3g and 3g+?

Tried phoning CellC support, but got after 20 minutes of being on hold I surrendered.

What to do? Anyone?

Cheers.

Had the same issue. Found out that my sim wasnt Rica'd.
Got it Rica'd and worked fine after that.
Good luck and enjoy your prize

I've RICAd the thing.

I've done some more investigation and so far things seem to be:

The modem does not work with the bloody USB extension cable I bought.

I don't have a laptop so cannot move it around without the cable.

On my PC I don't get a signal at all when plugged in.

On another PC I get an edge (?) signal which is no good as it is half the speed of my 384 line.

Weird thing is, on my PC, with the cable it connects to 3G but I can only access the CellC site, on another PC with the cable it says USB device not recognized.

Urgh.

I want to say thanks to rpm and sing CellC's praise but will only do once I get this darn thing working.

Just not sure what to do next!

1. Don't use extension cable. Period.
If you really need, rather connect modem to the powered USB 2.0 hub, then longer extension cable between PC and hub is allowed.
2. You can connect to the CellC Web site but not others, I suspect for the reason that you are loosing many transmitted packets. Reason is that modem on the long cable is not supplied with sufficient power, see #1

This is a common problem, not all USB extensions are created equal, and even weirder, a cable that will work on one PC, might not work on another.

This seems to be a common problem, seeing you haven't been able to connect at all I'd say your SIM hasn't been properly activated.
It sometimes happens while you are connected, but that is another problem described here and touch wood it hasn't happened in a while.

Why not? If it works, it works.

I disagree with this, this is a provisioning problem, it is as if the data bundle is not available.

Well, I have to extend it somehow, as I get no signal whatsoever if it's just plugged into my USB port.

I'll have to get a hub I suppose. My motherboard has some super USB power thing though, designed for charging devices from the USB... so I don't know, will have to experiment.

Yeah, weird indeed.

As said, works on my PC fine but not on others, but it has just occurred to me this is because of my super powered USB ports, mentioned above.

Posting now from another computer, connected via the thing but it's on edge.

Which just confuses the hell out of me.

Modem takes power in pulses (10 to 20 times of average current). Even your mobo has super power, inductance of the cable will limit transmitting power. Transmitted packets are lost and tower will not authorise your sim card correctly. Still might allowing you to browse free web site. Ginngs is also right.

Copa,

you can only use a short max 8'' extention cable with a usb modem( did some homework).

I can get 6'' cables only. I doubt that will help you much but could prevent the unit from sticking straight out at the back of your PC.

@Copa... I'll buy your prize from you for R500 cash! :p
See you in about an hour...

I'll get it working you bugger, even if I have to superglue my PC to the roof. :D

@ everyone else, thanks for the info, now I've gone and wasted 50 bucks on a bloody cable that won't work. Grrr.

Well, I have to admit, I am utterly unimpressed so far, both by the device and also by the service I have received from CellC.

I feel a bit terrible on account of this being a cool prize and all but it does not work and my attempt to phone CellC for help simply ended in 20 minutes being assured by a robotic voice that my call is important.

As things stand, according to the places where I am able to get a 3g signal whilst on a USB extension cord, I'll have to find a way to suspend my PC in the middle of my room. Any practical place where I can actually have my case sitting = No signal.

:wtf:

This is highly vexing and my inability to get through to CellC support has been quite bloody perplexing.

This could be PEBKAC, just by the way, I don't have any idea what I am doing here.
