Hi guys,

Area?

Ive bought at Communica per meter before at a good price.

Otherwise get a roll from esquire or dbg.co.za

Matrix sells it at +- R3.50 a meter last time I checked.

Cat what? 6 is a bit more expensive than 5e, but probably better to wire a house with since it's more future proof. Cat 5e is cheaper but an older standard.

Esquire has big rolls of cable, connectors, boots, jacks, patch panels etc.

Cat6 was for a while (before Gigabit Ethernet) and didn't really pick up.

ACT Link, a 100m reel is R 135,00 (smallest you can get). Then you have some left over so you can do your friend's house. Product code is: CAB-CAT5ES100

CAT6 is the official Gigabit cable. 5e is designed for 100Mbit but supports up to gigabit in limited lengths. 6 Was designed for Gigabit speeds and supports up to 10Gbps in limited lengths. FFS at least check your facts before talking nonsense on a tech forum.

Cat5e was designed for gigabit ethernet. Cat6 arrive later with even even higher specifications.

Either way if you don't do a proper install of either you might end up being out of spec anyway.

Goes without saying, I just meant if you're doing a new installation anyway, you might as well go for the higher spec. (Seeing as the OP didn't mention which cable he was talking about.)

Gauteng, JHB side preferably. Which is better Cat5e or Cat6. Wiring the house as PS3 can't stream HD content over HD and I hate being on wireless upstairs. Anyone been through this aswell and willing to give me helpfull tips :).

is it easy to wire your house? Current house just got a professional in & they did a great job but were expensive. But building a 200m house at the moment, want to wire up each room, looking at just doing it myself.

Right, as ponder corrected your statement, I don't need to argue. I was trying to say that before Gigabit Ethernet was oficially adopted, cat6 cables were already on the martket targetted for Gigabit Ethernet. It didn't happen as ponder pointed out. But this is probably a reason you think that cat6 cable is official gigabit standard. :)

Early adoption of 10Gb Ethernet use Cat6 cable, but installation restrictions are severe, industry started looking for alternative. Now I read that Cat6 cable is not recommended for new industrial installations. What is going on?

New cable standard is emerging called Cat6A. It will relax little bit installation requirements, making it possible for home user. However there is lot of confusion related to the Cat6A, due to difference between American EIA/TIA and ISO/IEC standards. Read about here: http://www.category6a.eu/web/Microsites/ISO_Cat6a/6a_Facts/ClassEa_vs_Cat6a/

What devices will be available for home users in few years ahead? I don't know. Perhaps copper, but maybe fiber optic become affordable?
Situation is not clear as it was in the past when all early 100Mbps installations were receiving Cat5 cable (even only 2 pairs were used).

Cat5e. You might consider Cat6A (UTP version), subject to price and availability. Don't bother with Cat6.

Very easy. The most difficult part is threading the cable through the ceiling.

Here's a video by a professional installer, (not someone who got fed BS by the guy at his local PC shop that a lesser spec cable is somehow way awesomer and better) explaining the difference between the different categories of UTP cable, as well as their history. He doesn't cover Cat 7 though as far as I know, since that's not really used for home installations. Also that's shielded I think...

It covers US installation codes but the tips apply to any installation as well. Basically just ensure that the cables don't get damaged. Also untwist as little of the cables as possible when you add the connector or wall plugs in the ends.

I use a HD wireless transmitter I got from Miro, was about R 2200 for the two components. With an HDMI splitter, I can watch HDTV upstairs quite easily. My house is a mission to wire up because of the convoluted roof arrangement and layers, so this did the trick.

But if you are building, have the electrician run you conduit where you want it, and get him to put in draw wires, then you and he will know the pipes are free from blockages
