512 down, 512 UP?

Hi,

I thought ADSL was 512kbps downstream, 256 up, but the two apps I have that monitor bandwidth report more like 512 down AND 512 up, or even more than 512 up. And that's with both up and down running at max.

The 256kbps extra up can't all be down to compression, can it (especially when all uploads are mpgs, rars, zips etc. anyway)?

[Actually, do bandwidth monitors report total rate as in how-much-uncompressed-data-when-decompressed or simply as the amount of data flowing regardless of its compression?]

Whatever that answer, 512kbps or more UP is way more than telkom advertises afaik, so what's going on?!

Same here - at least whenever I upload content to my web-site I always get 512 up, at least according to the util I use (http://www.dumeter.com/?LangID=EN

If this really is ADSL, then surely by definition DL and UL rates are different. Is it perhaps the case that we have the capability for much higher DLs built into the network, and we just need Telkom to flip a switch to give them to us?

Yeah, I guess that's why the thread was quietly forgotten. But, my point in my follow-up is that if it's the case that our network supports higher speeds by _default_, and they're currently being throttled, there's a speck of hope somewhere. Err, yeah!

If you have a look at the "data rate" information that is available on some of the ADSL modems you will notice that the speed offered by the link is still asymmetrical. On my system it shows :

Up stream: 640
Down stream: 1728

In theory I could (on my line) achieve 640kbps uploads and 1.728Mbps download speeds - now that WOULD be nice...

Well, what I've noticed is that with an acct directly from telkom you almost get the normal 512KB download speed, but upload speed you can even go more than that.
With M-web as your ISP you get 512/256 and thats it, no more. I never go over that.

I've also looked at the connection speeds on a few ADSL Routers (D-Link, NetGear etc.) and noticed the following:

Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 2048 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 512 kbps

I also know personally that on those 2 routers my ADSL in the UK showed 512/256 as the connection speed. Just as it is suppose to be and I got my 64KB/sec down and 32KB/sec upload most of the time.

Is it just me or does it look like we connect at the maximum speed capable here in SA (I know that was the case in the beginning stages of testing ADSL in SA) and then our speed just gets limited with server-side software or something like that.

Someone want to explain a bit...?

That's weird. One of my buddies is with Mweb and I get 512/512 on his account, with a Marconi router (which I got with my Telkom acc). ??

Hmmm, let's just say this is the one thing I really don't want Telkom to "fix"!

But hopefully it's the case that we AREN'T limited to 512 down as far as the technology is concerned. Always good to have room for improvement, even if right now only Telkom decides when to improve...
