Now that uncapped hype is in SA, I've looked at theoretical maximum's that one can achieve based on the speed of the line over a month. And what Telkom's take would be based on the Analogue and DSL rentals they charge.

Speed 384kb/s 512kb/s 1024kb/s
GB/Month 118.65 158.20 316.41
Telkoms Line Rentals R 283 R 457 R 544
Telkom R/GB 2.39 2.89 1.72

Now can someone explain why the 512 is more expensive? Based on the calculations and a *simple average between the 384 and 1024 charges you'd get R2.05 /GB , this would work out to R194 / month on the ADSL part ( Total = 325) not the current price of R326 ( Total = 457).

Guess our suck thumb Telskum just couldn't resist ripping people off with that one.

*in order to keep apples compared to apples the average for 384 and 1024 is 704kb/s. so yeah.

Exactly why I havent evern considered 512 to date, and won't soon, unless something changes drastically.

Before doing that I suggest you learn the differences between kiloBYTE and kiloBIT before posting this, and then also megaBIT, but you should also be aware that the telom line comes in 384kbps 512kbps and 4096kbps to get a better calculation.

512mbps is a RIP OFF

 ... maybe you're from some alien world where technology is so advanced that you guys talk about Gigabytes and Terabytes per second, but down here I would so immensely stoked to have even half of that :p

However, if you're talking 512 kilobytes, well then I would have to agree with you ;)

OK we all know that he actually meant 512kbps. Stupid mistake, but we all tend to dream of 512mbps as well.

To the OP: you should edit the Title of this thread - change it to 512kbps.

Yes Telkom's 512kbps service doesn't make sense. It is priced wrong.

512/384 = 1.33
R326/R152 = 2.14

i.e. A 512kbps line is 1.33 times the speed of a 384kbps line, but 2.14 times the price! Definitely not worth it.

Alas, some people (like me) simply can't live with a slow 384k line, but our lines/exchange don't support 4mbps yet, so we would rather take a marginally faster 512k line, even though the cost-to-speed ratio doesn't make sense.

Yeah I know I know I can't edit the friggin title and it was an early morning post,

it's meant to be 512kb/s, or kbps FFS

Yet you didn't spot it first, just following along like a good little lamb..

And if your actually thought through first befrore posting stupid responses, if I'd based the 512kb/s on 512mbps then it would have come in way cheaper, there is **** all wrong with the calculations, the 512mbps is a Typo GOT IT? I'm not a friggin editor or proof reader and I don't see you jumping on the all the articles that mybroadband releases with spelling and grammer and typo's. Rather stfu.

Getting 512mbps from Seacom would be a ripoff, however it was absolutely awesome to have that much bandwidth to my disposal :D
Your biggest problem is getting servers that allow you to download faster than 100mbps...

Yeah another way to look at it that proves they thumb sucked that price.

I can not see how they can justify the price on it other than, like in your case, based on users budget. This just says that some employee at Telkom averaged out all their customers census data, came up with a price that looked good to their marketing bosses to screw the consumers over.
