57db line attenuation - Is there an easy/quick fix?

^ thats just because you guys haven't gone into business with the electricity thieves
 
I really hope that Telkom will deploy additional MSANs in areas where they have already installed cabinets. I won't get my hopes up until I see a concrete plinth next to my SDC. I could probably apply for a VDSL connection but there doesn't seem much point since I am 1.7km away from the exchange. I think that I'll wait to see if the current 10Mbps ADSL2+ is going to get a speed increase. I don't know why Telkom doesn't release an MSAN build schedule - this will generate a lot of interest and result in a much faster uptake of the new services when they become available.
 
How do you guys know how far you are from the exchange closest to you?

Well, checked router status...decibel reading came down by a whole 1. Now sitting on 56db. Did a mybroadband speed test, 2 meg line:

At 56 if your sync is stable then I doubt that it has anything to do with the distance to your exchange. There's reports of poor performance on Afrihost and Mweb today. If its not your ISP then it could be congestion. My downstream attenuation is 63dB, and that allows me to sync at 1.5 Mbps max, but I'm able to get the full 150 KB/s out of it.

Take your downstream attenuation in dB and divide it by 13.81 to get a rough idea i.e. ~4km in your case.

Attenuation increases by roughly 13.81 dB for every Km of cable length used. So divide you DS Line Attenuation by 13.81 to get an estimated cable run in Km to the DSLAM port (at the exchange).

Not an exact science, there are many other factor that can influence, but should give you a decent ballpark figure.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. Even with it being about 4km, I cant understand what has changed that my connection speeds are so bad now. I even changed to my bkp ISP and did a speed test, and results are even worse (hence the reason they are the bkp :D)

So def an issue Telkom side, I was getting close to 2 megs a few months ago...wonder WTF they did to break it so badly?

Usually one of two things, or a combo of both. Line has degraded (high error rates) or the backhaul from your exchange has become congested (usually at peak times).
 
Tested my line again early this AM:

Local:
1.91 download

Int:
1.89 download

So there is congestion...wonder who the b@stard is causing this kuk as it was fine 2 months ago...added the line attenuation high decibel reading. Doubt this will get sorted. Thing is, like most people, I use the net in the evenings. So whats the point then of having a 2 meg line if I get nowhere near it when I use it? Think I need to downgrade :(
 
My line attenuation was 63.5dB,then went down for over a week.
When they fixed the faults i got new stats and after weeks of fighting and weeks of testing, it came down to the stats below.
However after 5PM im sure my exchange is suffering from congestion, so i have had to cancel Unotelly and Hulu.:(
