Hi

Seeing as no one knows, and that includes customer care, I am posting in the hope that there is an individual out there with an answer that makes sense :o

Bought my gf's 5800, out of the box it has V20.x on it.
Now that V21.x is out, we tried doing an upgrade, using the *#0000# -> Options, check for updates trick.
It says, no updates are available.

However, theres many folks who have upgraded.
Anyone have any ideas why or how to get around it?

Edit: We're with Vodacom

vodacom brands the firmware on your phone dont they ... so the product code on our phones cant get the latest. i think thats it. if we were to unbrand them (though im unsure how) we could get what we wanted.

ps : im also in stupid vodacom and also stuck on v20.

i'm with vodacom as well, upgraded my software using *#0000# last week. worked with no problems..

i could never use the PC suite to upgrade for some wierd reason.

in fact when i connect my phone in usb or pc suite mode it keeps disconnecting and reconecting.. not sure why tho, and that hasnt changed even thou i've upgraded the firmware from V12 ot V20 to V21.

mmm,
well if it is indeed a branding issue, and we cant do it ourselves how do we do it :P
Frigging awesome being dictated for something Im paying for.

Ill try PC updating again tonight, and see what happens.I just don't know why some people's updates work and others don't. Why would vodacom brand only some...

There is a work-around. I don't know how or who approves the firmware versions of the phones for the networks in South Africa, but I had the same problem with updating firmware with my Nokia E66. Was very buggy out of the box, poor reception, restarting when starting Nokia maps etc.

Tried to do a firmware upgrade via Nokia PC Suite and NSU but it would only state that the "Firmware was up to date for my country or region" when a simple search on the net showed that at least four additional firmware upgrades had been released, with indications that these would address the problems that I had been having with the phone.

I have downloaded a program called NSS, which allows you to re-write the product code on your phone. You will need to do a search for generic product codes for your phone per region, (a simple google search with "Generic Product codes Nokia XXXX" will bring up quite a few forums with a host of codes). Once you have done this, connect back to NSU and it will find the latest firmware for you.

Worked like a charm for me.

Have a look here: http://nokia.nigelcoldwell.co.uk/firmware.htm it describes how to do it and what you need.

Just remember: USE AT YOUR OWN RISK :)

Pleasure mate, it really does work and the instructions on the site seem a bit convoluted, but if you follow them properly, its actually quite an easy and painless procedure.

I upgraded my E65, E66, 6120 and 6124 this way and the difference was quite remarkable, especially with regards to memory leakage, stability, GPS signal etc (E66). Prior to this it took about 2 minutes, sometimes longer to lock onto the GPS, now it takes no more than 5 seconds, so there are definite advantages to upgrading.

Enjoy playing.... ;)

for some dumb reason NSS doesnt see my phone ... crap ...

Did you connect the phone in PC suite mode? After that, close off and exit PC suite and run NSS. Click on the magnifying glass icon top right and wait for the scan. Then click on the phone info icon. In the centre of the screen is an "Actions" column containing three buttons namely scan, power and read. Click on the 'Scan" and you should see the phone details.

Next to this "Actions" column is the "Product Data Edit" column, make sure to tick all the "Enable" check boxes and you should be up and running.

Well, we tried pc mode update, nothing.
She isnt comfortable on changing the product code either, or tainting any warranties, so it seems we are stuck under the dictatory grip of vodacom...

I connect my phone to pc ... select pc suit thingy on phone.
First that OVI thing comes up ... and i could see my phone in ovi ... then i closed ovi and it didnt work in nemesis.

Then i installed pc suite 7 something. and tried the same procedure. still nadda.
tonight i will uninstall all the suites , and the reinstall only pc suite and retry ...

ive even tried JAF but it misses some dll ...

I'm getting my 5800 in a weeks time. I'm just wanting to make sure on a few things. I'm getting it through vodacom. So if I can't upgrade my firmware to what should I change the product code? What is the product code for the generic sa version or the mtn phone? Since I suspect those should be the once we should use for the best results with least chance of messing up the phone.

There is a risk to this. I think it will void the warranty as well. I don't think Vodacom will support the latest firmware. Perhaps it clashes with some of their own stuff. I'm just guessing.

The phone comes with a nokia warrenty along with the vodacom warranty. ;) So just send it to nokia rather than vodacom. And in my opinion if you just change back the product code to vodacoms one, just before taking it in, i'm pretty sure they'll not even notice. And for firmware clashing with vodacom. I doubt it. Vodacom just need to approve the new firmware and then all the clients can update. But it's been a fact for some time already that they take ages to approve even the smallest update.

I even flashed my sony ericsson k800iv with the k810 firmware before. A few weeks later my phone did not want to charge anymore so I send it in and it got fixed for free under warrenty, no questions asked.

Won't you elaborate on this point, please?

As you have this as a 'fact' won't you explain which firmware versions on which handsets took how long to test and approve?

Maybe a short list with the following columns could work:

1) Handset make and model.
2) Firmware revision.
3) Date firmware was released by the vendor.
4) Date vendor supplied the firmware to Vodacom for testing.
5) Date Vodacom approved the firmware.
6) Number of times firmware was rejected before approval.

If you can give me a few examples, I can take it up with the testing department to get them to jack it up.

ok i have no ide where im screwing up , but i seriously cant get nss to see my phone.

uninstalled all nokia apps and cable driver.
Installed new pc suite.
connected phone and got it in pc suite.
closed pc suite open nss.
do scan bla bla .. .nothing ... just flashing error.

so uninstalled everything ... back to really old cable driver ... nadda.

last option is to uninstall nss and all the nokia stuff , and start all the way from scratch.

NSS is not able to change the code on the 5800. It needs some or other change, which everyone is waiting for. Search for changing product code on the 5800. There is a method.
