Buying on a budget, which one to choose?

The 5870 is a Sapphire 5870 2GB Vapor-X @ R1500
The GTX480 is a inno3D with the hawk cooler @ R2300

GTX480

1. It's a better card
2. Nvidia > AMD
3. Green team
4. AMD make bad cpu's
5. Intel <3's Nvidia
6. Intel make killer cpu's
7. Red is an offensive colour
8. Nvidia is an original name
9. You will be happier

Ignore anybody that says otherwise

R1.5k is a good price!
Cooler, and less power draw..

In terms of max FPS, then take the 480. but it's still R800 more.. is it worth the fps gain?

Based on the logic here (and the posters nick), I'd say the 5870 might just be the safer bet! :D

Ignore this poster typical fanboi. According to this: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html the 480 outperforms the 5870, it's up to you whether it justify's R800 or not.

gtx 480 comes pre build oven on it:( ( it runs insanely hot)

rather get 5870, uses less power, runs cooler, not much slower

One moment while I check my archives...
At those prices, 5870 presents 30% better value for money, so thats what I would pick. Do note, that it will be roughly 15% slower (8 fps on average) than the GTX480. To give a rough indication of the performance you can expect, I was running BF3 on all settings high, 1920x1080, no AA/AF on a HD5850 without issue.

You beat me to it. I would also go for the 5870 for that reason. Plus you save quite a bit of money that you can use to justify a future upgrade. :)

Okay, got a better price on the GTX480. :) So, might be going for that.

BTW, this is the card:

Yes, I know the stock one runs like a furnace, but it is winter after all. :D and the hawk cooler helps a lot as well.

At that new price for the GTX480, HD5870 is still better value, but only by 12%. Skews the lines a lot more... I'd say either one will be a good choice with those prices.

Took the GTX480. :)

I'm glad you took my sound advice. It'll run any game just fine, probably for quite a while to come.

Archer I love how you roll :
Let me check my archives...
Nice badass vibes bro, that's like ****ing 2 generations ago, and it doesn't matter that the latest range only got released like in 5 minutes ago.
