I don't think there will be enough listeners... but then again I dont listen to the radio anymore so don't know much bout demographics of today's listeners

There are few stations I agree, soo many genres are out there that you'll never get to hear on SA radio that I'm sure could be catered for.
A station that played latin jazz and similar styled world music genres would be nice.

the " before the change " listeners will tune in, and how will they know how many listen anyway? control groups? no, that is not so accurate as they hope to be !
promo's and adds will play and money will fly even if only white guys listen, who will know?

Yeah 5fm aint so good anymore.... either Kfm of when we in the mood for a prank call... call a bud... put phone by speaker and put on Lotus FM

Whats wrong with shoutcast? besides bandwidth of course.... all the music... none of the talking
AcidRain beat me to it, but he raises the point that once again Telkom is the villain.
At least 20% of my bandwidth each month goes to listening to music. Not downloading it, not pirating it, but as an alternative to radio. South Africans have no concept of real broadband, we complain of local radio stations catering to local markets because we have no alternative, we think it is being forced on us, but broadband should provide us with choice but instead we hit the arguments of
a) I don’t have the bandwidth to waist or
b) Music on the internet is piracy, I don’t want to steal.
We can listen to thousands of legal radio stations, someone said "A station that played Latin jazz and similar styled world music genres would be nice", I have a list of the best in that genre if you like, It is what I mainly listen to. And the only way I can hear FMR is via the Internet, despite being less than 10Km from the studio, because they can’t afford the Telkom charges to get a line to Constatiaburg, or is it that Sendtech consider it a minority station and won’t allocate bandwidth (I have no inside info, just guessing).
There is so much we can do on broadband, so much that would relive tensions in this country, so much that could educate and enlighten, but instead we have a culture that says if you use more than 3Gig you are an abuser, “you must be doing something illegal, you pirate or porn addict.”
The Internet contains the worlds culture, Art, Music, its history, its science, its breaking news, and education on any topic you could imagine. But, thanks to Telkom, we bitch about local TV and radio, pay DSTV so we can get CNN and soon ETV, we lament the cost of local DVD’s because we are to scared to shop online, and if we do will the post office deliver it?
The most frightening thing of all is, do we want our kids to have Internet access at school?
The school boards think only of the negatives that our society, fooled by Telkom, wants us to think, and that is that it is only really useful for email and booking tickets on SAA. Anything beyond that is abuse and it is far to expensive to waste on kids.
Bottom line, listen to Internet streams and join the fight to show that we do have legitimate reasons to use more than 3Gigs, and whilst we are at it, lets push for cheaper local access, so that South African Artists, DJ’s and Stations can afford to stream music and be heard by the rest of the world. The South African artist is just another of the potential markets being crippled by Telkom, unfortunately the government only sees “Call Centres” as needing bandwidth, so far, and so they get concessions.

if someone is saying that a band sold out, they refer to the fact that the band changed their style and sound to appeal to a bigger audience.
i think this is pretty much what 5fm is doing

All these threads about 5fm, and guys who don't like the music they play.
Its simple guys, change to another station. Stations will change, if you don't like what they have become go to another station. If you cant find another station, go buy your kind of music and listen to that in your car/mp3/cdplayer etc (if you not mainstream you gonna have to pay, this applies to almost everything in life - supply and demand dictates).
This whining about the music various stations play is pathetic, you have other choices use them.

DSTV's DMX is not bad...
A lot of genres and no annoying DJ's
Cant agree. I cant find a single radio station that caters to my tastes, other than streaming from the internet.
Our radio stations are catering to target groups, but in other countries (and what I would love), the radio stations play according to a music genre, either rock/country/oldies etc.
Simply changing to another station just gets you a different DJ, but same crap music.
I know I stopped listening to 5FM cause I don't like their music anymore.
I now either listen to CDs or MP3s in the car or im tuned to
1) 567 Cape Talk (most likely)
2) K-FM or GoodHope FM
GoodHope now and again play some nice songs, I jump between all my sources to make sure I don't listen to crap. So far I really enjoy NOT listening to music and listening to what Cape Talk has to say.
I now either listen to CDs or MP3s in the car or im tuned to
1) 567 Cape Talk (most likely)
2) K-FM or GoodHope FM
GoodHope now and again play some nice songs, I jump between all my sources to make sure I don't listen to crap. So far I really enjoy NOT listening to music and listening to what Cape Talk has to say.

I installed a CD/MP3 player in my car when I bought it just over 2 years ago. In that time I've used it's radio function a grand total of twice.
There is not one station in this country that plays the music I enjoy. They all cater to the poor taste of the general population. 5fm went downhill years ago (around the time they fired Barney Simon)
I think I'll just stick to burning new compilations for my car and listening to streams from stations in other countries.

I think for you in East London you really screwd. When I was there you cant listen to 567 Cape Talk or Talk Radio 702, you dont have K-FM or GoodHope FM.
All you have really is 5FM and AlgoaFM. About three years ago 5FM was the only one I listened to.. sigh. Now eastern cape radio is pretty useless.
I remember end of 2005 I first thought this station is going backwards. it just went worse for me after the end of 2005.

In Joburg, we have the students stations: TuksFM and UJFM. These stations play rock all day long. Barney Simon is a DJ on TuksFM.

You are saying if I cant find something, then use MP3's/CD's etc.
I want a radio station that caters to my tastes, and it seems I am not alone at all.
