6 Reasons why VLC is Boss

No I.T degree, but as a person who uses computers day to day. Without doubt VLC is the best media player of all time.

Here's why :

1. The GUI is simple to use and not consumed by fancy graphics. This basic GUI has been used for what seems like forever. When a media player upgrades to fancy complicated graphics, sometimes the users start looking elsewhere.

2. It can play a video within a RAR file without having to extract it first. (This is one of my favorite features). You can quickly playback a RAR file containing a video to check if its the correct one, without spending several seconds or minutes extracting.

3. You can play videos from other websites direct on including YouTube and download them. You can also stream live radio, internet radio and podcasts. Playing youtube on VLC is one of the coolest things. You don't have to open a browser. You can save the URL for your favorite YouTube music mix and play it everyday without ever having to open your browser.

4. VLC was one of the very first players to support HEVC (x265) and continues to lead in video format support. Its almost safe to say that VLC can play ANY video format out there.

5. It can record your desktop. Obviously other tools are more suitable for this such as Camtasia Studio. However because vlc offers this option this makes it unique for home users who just want to record their desktop and share on youtube. Elite tools like Camtasia Studio cost between R2500 - R3100. This point then leads us to the next reason.

6. VLC is FREE

Never really got into it.
Haven't used it in a while, but I found the pause/playback to have a slight delay to it.
It also didn't pause/playback when clicking the screen.
VLC also does this updating font cache thing every now & then?
Those are probably options I can set, but MPC & klite codec pack just worked out the box without having to fiddle with it too much.
 
Had to rip only the audio soundtrack from a video DVD into mp3 - VLC to the rescue !
Was super fast and I could set bitrate
 
OP would make a good BusinessTech writer with boss titles like this thread :D

On topic though, while I love VLC, the Films and TV app that comes with Windows 10 has treated me well. I haven't installed VLC since I upgraded to 10, but I will go back when I come across something it doesn't support. The chances of that are rather slim, as I use Chromecast and Plex more often these days.

I've never understood people who still install codec packs :P
 
For local file playback, VLC has always been my go-to. I use it whenever I'm away from my home network...it's a good piece of software.

OP: I don't want to be that guy but I hope you've donated something towards its upkeep :o

Also the best video player on the iPad. Just drag and drop video files from the computer to VLC on the tablet via WiFi.
 
I moved from VLC to GOM player.... never looked back ... GOM is more simple to use

I prefer GOM too. Plays virtually everything, has keyboard shortcuts that make sense to me, and is also free.
