MORE than 600 police officials – two-thirds of them from police stations across Nelson Mandela Bay – will be deployed as security guards at the ANC election manifesto launch in Port Elizabeth this weekend.

Several police officials confirmed that a joint operations centre – manned by police top brass – had been in operation since Monday, while today there would be a venue operational centre which would include other emergency services such as ambulances, the fire department and traffic officials.

Department of State Security officials also arrived in Port Elizabeth this week along with other top police officials from national and provincial head office.

While several police officials voiced concern yesterday over deploying hundreds of officers to act as security guards for VIP delegates at their hotels and at the manifesto event at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, senior police management said the move was necessary in the interests of effective and peaceful crowd control.

Among units which are deployed are the elite Special Task Force, VIP Protection Unit, Airwing, Public Order Policing and several other intervention units. In addition, several police officials have also been deployed to the various beachfront hotels where the delegates are staying.

One police official confirmed that some police stations had to deploy between 10 and 40 police officials per station to the event.

Of the 600 policemen, about 400 are from around Nelson Mandela Bay.

The event is taking place under the Gatherings Act, which means security falls under the mandate of the police, not the stadium or a private security company.

Events are usually held under the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act, where security falls under a private security contractor.

One official, who declined to be named, said there was concern over resources being taken away from police stations.

“When it gets queried as to what about normal policing for the residents, we are told to not worry about the crime. The main concern is about the safety of our communities,” the official said. “We have now been downgraded to security guards for a political rally.”

The fact that they need 600 police officers to "protect" them says all that needs to be said about the general populations feeling towards the ANC "top brass"...

That drunk on expensive whiskey comment made to the ANCWL person is spot on the money.... they have no idea about the man on the street anymore and they don't care.

Must be proof nobody likes the ANC, why else would they need 600 police for a political rally.
Shame, I wonder how many residents will be victims of crime while their ANC is guarded like nkandla

She is also the Minister of Social Development...

Will also be very interesting to see what the turnout at the rally is like....

Hopefully more than the 70 people they managed at NMMU...

The ANC are bussing in residents from all over the Eastern Cape so I predict a packed stadium.

(if it were not for the mybb conference I would have disappeared to a game park for the weekend)

Don't worry about crime. ANC first, people of SA last.

If this CancER had not been busing people into this event, they would not have needed said crowd control. In addition, if a political party wants to rouse up a storm, ALL related expenses must be for their own back pocket! Why should taxpayers have to foot the cost of their infinite madness?

SASSA trucks being loaded with free blankets (paid for by the fiscus, therefore with our tax) to be handed out at the ANC Manifestó Launch in Port Elizabeth. This truckdriver was instructed to go straight to the ANC Regional Office.

You actually have to be amazed at how blatant they are about it. Don't even try hide it in anyway.

It's like in Durban where the municipality has an insert in The Mercury every week. This week it was all about voter registration. Who wants to guess what colour scheme they used? Yup that's right yellow and black. Not the obvious choice of blue and white of the municipality which is usually used. They had also made thousands of t shirts and other promotional material in that scheme, evident in the pictures in the insert.

ANC supporters slept outside NMB stadium ahead of manifesto launch

Port Elizabeth - Many ANC supporters had spent the night outside the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth ahead of the ruling party's launch of its 2016 local government manifesto on Saturday, according to a spokesperson.

"As early as last night, scores of enthusiastic supporters dressed in the black, green and gold of the party faithful have been camping out outside the stadium gates in anticipation of today's events, braving the formidable Port Elizabeth wind," said national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa.

"Since dawn hundreds of people have been queuing outside the stadium where the ANC will unveil our people-centred blueprint towards the August municipal elections."

Buses and taxis had been ferrying people to the stadium.

Dressed in the bright gold t-shirts with a picture of President Jacob Zuma printed on them, the crowds began filling the orange and red chairs in the stadium.

Kodwa said they were expecting over a 100 000 supporters to attend the event.

Democracy is a farce when corruption is at the very foundation of 'free and fair' elections. If it is not fair, then it is not democratic.
