SanDiskR expanded its line of solid state drive (SSD) products with the introduction of a 64-gigabyte (GB) SSD aimed at both enterprise users and early adopter consumers such as gamers.

With 8GB memory sticks becoming commonplace, one can imagine fitting 8 chips in that space.

You use them just like regular disk drives AFAIK..

The big thing about solid state is no moving parts, which results in higher reliability (no wear and tear on moving parts).
Lower power consumption (no disks to spin) = longer battery life for laptops!!
Also of course an increase in speed (you no longer have a set of heads which physically need to move over a disk).

EDIT: I've never used one btw.. so I can't so how effective these points are in reality..

EDIT Again :p : Oh yeah.. one other thing that would be awesome about these solid state drives is the fact that no spinning disks also means no noise!! - That alone I would love.. I've already built a water cooling system for my PC simply in an attempt at bringing down the noise level.. I hate noisy PC's.. :(

I see, thanks :) So they are like big USB drives, just without the USB then?

They sound great, I hope they become mainstream quickly.

Will this mean that normal harddrives would get phased out in favour of these? I mean they sound better it should just be a matter of time for prices to drop and capacity to increase.. but I guess conventional drives will be bigger and cheaper for a long time still :/

I like this idea tho I'd have thought they'd just ship motherboards with like 5GB-10GB flash disks embedded for an O/S drive.[and make it bigger as things shrink] uhm.. I wonder if SATA interface is faster than the access speed of the device's memory and whether this a faster alternative.

Maybe this will result in two levels of HDD much like memory has the various levels based on access speed etc At 64GB its like a replacement tho. Just think dropping ur laptop will now be less fatal

Next thing they need to do is make a screen that occupies less space and a better user interface than the traditional keyboard and mouse.. then we can start looking like star trek :D
