64K dedicated line uber slow

We had a 64k Diginet line at the old offices - and it sucked.

When uncapped ADSL packages became available, we migrated over to such a package - and terminated the 64k line, and haven't looked back ever since.

Sure, we also had our disconnects, but these rarely lasts longer than a day.

So whoever got suckered in believing a 64k dedicated Diginet line should be faster than a 512k ADSL line ought to be given some more sense with a cluebat :D Heck, you do get 384k uncapped which is faster and cheaper than that slow monstrosity! :D
 
Unless you're using a shaped package, there should be no real difference in latency assuming the routing on your DSL's package ISP-side is right.
 
Thanks for all the replies......I have decided that I am going to keep my head down and wait for the paw paw to hit the fan...The boss will soon be asking why his 50Kb email takes 15 minutes to leave his outbox...:D
 
I would love to know who recommended this? Was it your IT guys or a non it person? If it was an IT guy, he should be hung by his .............

Apparently our CT branch use the same line and "Apparently" they have no problems.....So from what i can gather, Jhb assumed it would be sufficient and went ahead and ordered it *shakes head*

how many pc's at the CT branch and JHB branch?
I have a site with 8 pc's and we had a 64k diginet line. it was way to slow for exchange, sms, SAP and internet\intranet browsing
we upgraded to 256k diginet and its so much better and its a bit more then twice the monthly rent
you need diginet lines for uncapped and between buildings
ADSL will not work as well
our exchange, SAP, SMS and intranet, proxy servers are at the head office
sites are all connected by routers
just upgrade that line to 256k, its not that expensive and makes a world of a difference

N0 you don't, it works perfectly on ADSL and you can hardly compare R 2700 pm (including line rental) for 512Kbps between CT and JHB to what a 256Kbps Diginet line cost...... and you get double the BW!!!

As some have pointed against the storm of "ADSL FTW!" cries, Diginet lines have their benefits. I ran a company with 20 odd people about half of which were geeks i.e. bandwidth-hungry users on a 128kbps diginet line and it was always good: low latencies, very low contention ratios. Went down once in about 3 years (unlike my current ADSL setup) and when it did Telkom were all over it to sort it out. Downtime was measured in hours, not days like with ADSL.

Oh and as also mentioned: it is uncapped. Do the math: at a steady 8KB/s you can pull 20GB/month.

Those prices look attractive: R1400. We paid (about 4 yrs ago) about R2500/month for 128kbps.

between towns an ADSL line ( VPN ) is the only way to go if its uncapped thou and you need a comfortable bandwidth
but between buildings in the same town on your own WAN its radio or diginet or fiber not ADSL if you want to skip going into the dark cloud that is the internet with all it bandits ;) and don't forget its uncapped
yes you do get ADSL uncapped but its the dark cloud of uncertainty problem again

Just did a quote for 128Kbsp Ct to JHB -- R5089.50 pm. 512Kbps would cost you R17215.50 ex VAT pm.....

And it is uncapped - no dyndns.

Also I had a problem this morning with a line in JHB - took Telkom 1h30 mins to fix, and I was updated by sms when the call was logged, when the tech was assinged and when the fault was fixed (also called before the call was cleared).

btw - another client has been waiting for a diginet repair for 2 weeks!!!!

You can hardly call the ATM network a cloud of uncertanty... if you do then the same must go for all the MPLS networks in the country...

and btw all local bw is uncapped, and as before no dyndns here, so its true local.

Not as far as they are aware, but TK just keeps telling them its with tech..

What we have found is that the main focus after the SLA for ADSL came out (24hrs to repair or you get credit) the focus has shifted, and they spark for a ADSL fault.
 
Agree that ADSL is probably cheaper for browsing etc. We use ADSL on about 8 to 9 remote sites into our VPN. There also a couple of 3G VPN users. But thing is you need a decent upload speed that ADSL does not offer, even now it is only 512K Where as a 1 Meg Leased Line is a better option in that sense. Thinking about that wonder how a HSUPA card will work if the GB per month is not too much.

Saying that, we use our 1 Meg for all the VPN tunnels to our Head Office and then also for all our e-mails. The browsing runs on a 4 Meg ADSL. If we had SDSL here then a 4 Meg ADSL could replace the 1 Meg but till then. No go.

But in the example above... EISH! ADSL would give a higher upload for that VPN Grimspoon mentioned. Wonder what the background is that we are missing.

Remote Access -- Ok but try running a 1Mg Diginet line between Ct and JHB i.e. a WAN (I don't recall mentioning a VPN) according to TK tariff calculator you are looking at R32749.00 ex VAT pm !!!!!!!
