747 skids off Durbans Runway

Something small?! I bet you know a thing or two about SMALL!!

Thankfully we all got off with little or no injury and the damage to the plane was minor. This doesn't reflect what it was like to be on the plane before it came to a stop. Despite all your bravado, I bet the runway wouldn't have been the only thing wet if you were on the plane. Perhaps you need to have a life to realise it's worth and you do when you're sitting in a metal tube, aquaplaning and spinning around out of control at great speed (which is what happened before the one wheel etc dug into the ground bringing us to a stop).

Counselling is something you could progress to if the MRI reveals you actually have a brain, T0$$ER!

Sounds bad, luckily everyone's ok.


Btw does anyone know if everything's back to normal at the airport now?

Yeah, regardless of who you are, if you have a close brush with death you need to have counselling.

The airport was more or less back to normal by Thursday morning with Comair / BA sending extra planes. There were some delayed flights but due to unrelated reasons. My flight to JHB was delayed for over 2 hours as a result of a 'technical' problems and a part being flown in from JHB......

From what can be determined from all public reports to date:

1. The aircraft touched down fast and almost halfway down the runway.

2. An intentional groundloop was performed - which is regarded as the correct decision given the stressful and split second circumstances. This decision saved lives.


3. Damage was minor. The a/c was due to be flown back to JNB today.

4.As to whether the approach should have been made at all is a decision which rested with the Captain.

We'll just have to wait for the CAA report.

There were some bad ass crosswinds as well.
Generally, you'd aim to touch down on the 1st 1/3 of the runway.
