Other reviews/forums on the net favour the GTX 550 Ti, so it must be slightly better, especially at newer games. Also going by the graphics card hierarchy.

Budget is budget. It's just not as good value as a 6850/GTX460... :(

You can use Task Manager & GPU-z to check which component is the bottleneck. If the CPU is maxed out on both cores, then that will be your bottleneck.

Will it play comfortably on medium @ full hd res? I was playing cod 4 @ full hd with my 8800 gt with aa on.

I have the same one, it's over 3 years old and it's powering a AMD Athlon X4 @3Ghz, Radeon HD 5770, 3GB RAM, 1x 1TB HDD, 1x 1.5TB HDD, DVD Drive and 3 120mm case fans.

I reckon it should be fine...

Ouch.

But I understand that a budget is a budget.

By no means is it a crap card. It's just a half-specced 560ti. (take note of the width of the bus.... 128bits compared to 384bits for the 560.)
It will play a fair amount of games just fine, probably not Bf3 though. Possibly on low.

That 6790, although not my cuppa tea, seems pretty decent for its price.

Take a look at that.... is there any way that you can aim upwards at that? I'd wait 1/2 months if I could upgrade to something substantial.
 
What about second-hand? Something like Asus/Gigabyte that has remaining warranty. For R1.2k you could even look at HD6870... But your PSU might start becoming a concern.
 
The idea, is that I want just a replacement card for my 8800 gt, as in june i will get a whole new pc with the IVY bridge. That is why the gfx now wont be necessary to be awesome. that is why i think the 550 Ti should be fine. My current pc may just become some server or htpc or a second gaming one for lan.

If that's the case go for it.... or better yet, go for a second hand card?
