8800GTS 512mb -vs- HD4850?

I'm currently running a 8800GTS 512mb, which I have another use for, so I'm looking at getting a new card, but I'm not wanting to spend a fortune. How does the HD4850 compare to the 8800GTS 512mb version performance-wise?

I would personally recommend the HD 4850. Own it, use it, love it.

The 9800GTX is comparable to the 4850. The 4850 however can be overclocked to add performance that goes beyond the 9800GTX.

The price difference is also a major factor. Being that the HD4850 is/was R2000 cheaper than the 9800GTX.

Hmmm... it's to my understanding that the HD4850 does beat the 9800gtx in most games, only some games (eg:Crysis) the 9800gtx just pulls ahead... but whats more is the fact that the HD4850 supports DX10.1 and even better is that it has most of the features that are in DX11, so it will be better for the future.

2000 rand cheaper than gtx? not so sure about that, also you can overclock the 9800gtx BTW

Are you asking about the GTX+ or the GTX?

Only diff is the GTX+ can be overclocked much better.

Though I've seen many reviews where the 8800GTS 512 is the same as the 9800GTX therefore similar to the 4850.

In other words if you deciding which of the two to buy: get the 4850

if u already have the 8800GTS 512 then its not that much of an upgrade.

That's why I put the caveat was cheaper. At one stage.

I know you can also OC the 9800GTX but what I'm say is that with minimal effort (OCing) the 4850 can beat the 9800GTX hands down in everything!

If you are looking to upgrade your 8800GTS, then the 4850 won't be much of an upgrade. The 4850 was released to compete with that level of cards. Spend a little more and get the 4870.

don't have one but it's designed to take the heat. just get the hot air out of your case with an extra fan or two...

Not a major problem, I have the 4850 and its more or less the same ITO heat. Get an after-market cooler if you are worried. But you cant go wrong with the 4800 series. Really top notch!

Got the 4870. Nice and silent. It runs "hot" but that is 100% normal and it takes it without a problem. Some people are going all crazy about it. New technology. Made to handle it. Overall, a great performer do not have any heat/power usage problems.

The 4850 might have a small problem re: heat. As it does not push the hot air outside of the case like the 4870.

It will. It must. I run my Intel Quad Q9300 + 4GB DDR2 + HD4870 + 2HDD + DVD-Rom on a 460W PSU

has anyone ever wondered what would happen if Nvidia threw ddr5 on the gtx280? just a thought, but wouldn't that give that card about 200gb/s + memory bandwith!
