howzit guys

so some pll have been on the 8meg trail, any idee when this becomes availible?
and i heard the uplaod is stil on 512, wich makes it useless for gaming, for all i care the can keep the dld at 4meg and bumb us up to 2meg upload

haven't heard much in the way of 8mbps. next upgrade probably with the advent of ADSL2+

but i agree on the UL speed, 512kbps is, while not completely useless, pretty crap.

UL speed will have to be bumped up if we are ever going to participate in cloud computing, which I am a fan of

well it cant be a rumor as i kno a guy on the trail 8meg, so it must be in the pipeline, question is how far

can u or him give us some small info, like average download speed, latency (though i expect it to be the same as 4MB), youtube :D..etc

I know he or she is probably under an agreement but surely something can be said without violating it.

Telkom can't even maintain their current copper lines which are old and degraded. Many people with 4 Mbps are having synch problems. The recent rains just proved how fragile the network really is. If Telkom really want to bump us up to 8 mbps they are going to have to employ many more skilled technicians to keep this network up and running. I would love 8 mbps... but I can't even enjoy my 4 mbps line here at home or at the office.. .the line keeps dropping and having synch problems. Been through three or four Reference numbers apiece and still calling Telkom every day to keep the pressure on.

How far are you form the exchange? My line is perfect - never drops.

I highly doubt Telkom is testing out an 8mbps line, they can only just manage 3.5mbps on the so-called 4mbps line. Imagine if we ever do get an 8mbps line, they'll claim 8 but we'll probably be getting somewhere around 7megs if we're lucky...

Im synched at 4096/512 and download max out at 408kbs and its been stable for months. It all depends on your distance from the exchange

At the office we are pretty close to the exchange... but every time it rains all the manholes fill up with water. They can barely clear them before they fill up again. It is a constant problem in summer. At home I am about 1.5 to 2 kms from the exchange... my line was stable for a long time... just the recent rains that have sent it for a loop.

I had a similar problem. When ever it would rain the DSL would loose synch and my phone line was crackly to the point where it was impossible to have a conversation. I called and logged a fault though and it was sorted

I've been calling every day since January 22nd :( still dropping 100 times a day. on my 4th reference number now.

+1 ...They should have forked out the $$$ in the first place and ONLY deployed optics between the exchange and EVERY SDC - thus UMC ... the last mile copper stability wouldn't have been such a big problem now.

Its not just the 4megabit users having a problem...some of the lines are so bad that they are having problems going back to 384 from 4096.

"Great service!"

Fact if the matter is the infrastructure needs a major overhaul and like mrnutz said there is nothing we can do about their "great service"

well i logged 1 call for same issue and was fixed a day after. problem was that the initial tech did only 50% of his job (something about 2 leg connection, and it was only 1 leg connection hence the ****tynessness) together with the exchange was frot- the tech that did come out again had to reseat my line at both exchanges due to fact that it was in a terrible state.

after that my 4meg line was perfect. 448 all the way. no issues at all.

You do realise that the manholes are supposed to fill up with water? Thats why they do not join telephone lines as they designed to work under water. The connection to the distribution point in the manhole is air tight.

have you seen what 40+ years without maintenance can do to a jelly substance that is supposed to keep water out :)

it doesn't.

so either the Telkom technician was BSing me about the real problem or their air-tightness is not what it used to be? What difference does it make to me anyway? All I know is... it rains... and my lines go bad.
