I need to put 8mm Video tapes on my Pc and then to DVD discs, what's the best way to do this?

I have the camcorder also.

This is what the tape looks like:

Does Camcorder have video outputs? Analog?
Clean camcorder heads and connect it to any analog TV card. Hardware MPEG encoder recommended.

The problem with the camcorder is the heads are messed up, I'm not sure what outputs it has I will have to take a look and report back.

We have a solution but it not the best of quality that you would get with very expensive equipment but I know of a client that makes a living on converting old VHS to DVD’s using the KWorld DVD maker , in fact he is using the older version we now have the new one in stock called the DVD maker2

Stk# KW-DVD MAKER2

Hope this helps

Thanks for this, do you have anything that I can actually put the tape into and connect directly to the Pc?

If you aren't set on using a PC, I did a little bit of looking into this for a client and came up with a possible solution (though I'm no tape expert)...

Get one of those 8mm->VHS tape convertors if the 8mm is VHS-C that looks like a VHS tape, but has a slot for the 8mm to go into.

Then get one of the DVD recorder/VCR combo systems like at the top of this page (link below), and I don't see why you shouldn't be good to go. (Note, I could also be completely wrong :D)

Otherwise it looks like there are some PC solutions on here too:

Clean heads (they are always dirty) with cotton buds soaked with 90%+ isopropyl available in drug stores. It must be wet, but avoid spilling. Wait half hour to dry out before inserting tape (as alcohol dissolves magnetic powder).

Yip, video output type is important.
Re: recording, launch application software, set options, press record button.

Anyone know if there are 8mm film to PC converters around? Would like to convert my fathers old films to 60fps video, but am OK with 30ish

If you can't get the heads sorted you really only have two options buy or borrow a 8mm camcorder or deck.

Not going to work here, 8mm & VHS-C is not the same thing, there are no adapters available for 8mm. Got one of those VHS-C converters lying around somewhere.

Hi There,
That tape you used to be able to get a VHS cartridge that it fitted into and then you could use a normal VHS to read it and get your output from that.
I have seen video converter cards at Incredible connection which take normal RCA type jacks and you may find your camera outputs that as well provided you can get your heads clean.

Regards

Tim

There is a guy in Centurion doing this. We used him and he did a great job. He actually washes the film before converting as molds and stuff grow on the film over time and decreases the quality, Had films that was 50 years old and looks great.

How much did he charge per film?

Ok according to a few people I asked in the shops they say that the Camcorders heads are just dirty, I am yet to find someone who can help me with it though.

Rectron says they will charge me a minimum of R400 just to have a look at it :-/

Does anyone know of a place that I could take it to?

Years ago I got a camera from fj ward and when it went on the blink during warranty they told me to drop it off with this guy in new germany/pinetown, I'm sure if you call them they can give you his details.
Alternatively there's camera clinic, nemkish electronics, raphia video & tv repair.

Get a cleaning tape & alcohol and run it for a few seconds, alternatively get some cotton buds & alcohol from the chemist and diy, lots of videos on youtube.

Thanks for this will look them up tomorrow, I phoned nemkish already but I guess the person on the phone didn't know what I was talking about because it told me they need to replace the heads.

I would much prefer using a cleaning tape bit I am unable to find it anywhere.

Then use some cotton buds & alcohol, much cheaper anyway.
+1 Cleaning tape is easy to use, but cleaning is not as good as manual, particuarly if heads are already worn. It cause additional wearing. When you clean manually you also clean capstan and associated feed rollers responsible for wove@flutter.
