Hi,

I have an 8ta sim card that has been working fine in my iPhone with data and voice. I was under the impression that it should roam to the MTN network when 8ta coverage is not available.

Is this correct? I noticed that I cannot use data when my iPhone roams to the MTN network.

Please advise.

Thank you for your help - I have restarted my iPhone.

Do I need to have any specific settings for the APN to be able to roam to MTN, at the moment it is blank?

I am having this exact same problem. As soon as I roam to MTN on the iPhone 4 I lose internet connection. Can I PM my details to get this resolved?

This problem still persists, except now it's no longer only when roaming to MTN. I can be walking around a mall and the phone shows I am connected to 8ta but there is no data connection. No Whatsapp, etc. Have to reboot the phone to get it working again.
 
I have upgraded to the new Telkom Smarthome Supreme, which includes 5 x 1G internet data simcards.
I have the same issue of not being able to use the data where there is not a Telkom tower unless I activate roaming. When I activate roaming on my Telkom Huawei WiFi I am warned about extra charges.
What exactly is the situation ?
Will these data cards accrue charges when roaming or not ?

You need to confirm if the 1GB data is All Networks data or Telkom only data. If it shows All Networks data then you can roam on MTN towers and won't be charged extra.

At the risk of this sounding like a really stupid question, where can I verify the above dataplan ?
Do I need to contact a Telkom store, or can I just phone 10210 ?

I have the Huawei telkom mobile wifi device, with a telkom mobile sim, the card works in my phone to browse the net, receive msgs along with pinging odd sites, they reply.

When connecting with the wifi device, the MTN roaming network appeares, wont connect without data roaming, does not browse and no reply's from any sites.

why would this work in a phone and not the wifi device, exact same internet APN. no difference besides device.

Usually in modems there is a box that needs to be checked to enable "data roaming"

Double check to make sure that is enabled. Maybe it is not and then it won't connect. So you need to login to the mobile wifi device via a pc or laptop and check that setting because that might be your problem. ;)
