Ok, well for the past week or so, I have started to notice some 8ta adverts in PnP and other shops(flyers) advertising their 10GB data deals and also the 3G modem.

So I was all excited that they have coverage now here in Grahamstown. I am sick of my Cell C "5GB" special where they told me by February or so there would be 3G coverage here.

So I went to Checkers all eager to go get a 8ta sim card and RICA it. Got home, stuck it in my phone and... no Signal.. not even 2G for 8ta. Only roaming.

So I connect to roaming 3G on MTN and goto the 8ta website (which does by default cause I didn't put airtime on) which seems nice and fast. However you can only get the prepaid bundles which are expensive.

Is that false advertising? Or can I purchase the R1800 60GB + 60GB special and use it on the MTN network?

You have to phone 180 (with your sim) and ask the operator to disable roaming so that you can access the 8ta only data.

Only then will you be able to see the 2+1 and 60+60 bundles on the bundle menu.

But once roaming has been deactivated a modem will be able to show if you have 8ta 3G coverage.

According to 8ta's coverage map Grahamstown is now 3G enabled.

If you get the 10GB per month contract, they will give you the correct sim.

I am going to Gatstad on Thursday and will check this out.

It's about time, especially since Cell C dropped the pass !!!

A CellC rep told me today that some more special offers are on the cards. Last October their 120Gb SIM only offer was R 4000, today it is R 8000.

We will see, but their coverage is poor - they did not stick to their promises !

I have more confidence in 8ta at this point, at least they are rolling out new areas like Grahamstown and Tzaneen !

Def gonna give them a call and see if it is true :) If it is then it looks like they have a new customer :) Sorry Cell C but you were too slow..

Edit: Impressed with service, called 180 and got it all sorted out in less than 10 min. Might port my Vodacom number to 8ta too..

Hmmmmmmm, well according to the call center at 8ta I apparently have 3G coverage and can use the promo's.. But I don't have signal...

Glad you got it solved!

Actually 8ta rep on the forum claims, that now all prepaid SIM cards are able to access 8ta network by selecting manual network search on the handset and selecting 8ta, but is seems not true.

I watched this thread, as I had been arguing with 8ta rep on this issue. :)

Edit: Not solved, lets see what happen.

You need to restart your handset after conversion, sometimes needs manual network search and select 8ta. Do you see 8ta on the list of networks, SA-02 or 655-02?

Well I phoned them with my SIM card in phone. After they activated it for their network I can't get onto the MTN anymore which is good(with my 3G modem), but it won't pick up 8ta signal. So I wonder if there is actually coverage here... Or did they just lie?

It's not true, I had to get a sim changed just two days ago. Unless newer sims are different.

BTW, the sims seem to take a while before they work on 8ta data (after roaming switched off)

A key question is the part you have just quoted, but not answered. If you do manual network search does it show 8ta, SA-02 or 655-02 on the list of networks? I don't ask whether it accepts your selection, it can take hours.
If it does show on the list, is fine. If doesn't, then you have no network coverage.

Other matter if accepts your selection

Hi koeksGHT, and feedback for us ? I want to know if the 8ta really works in Gatstad, going there on Thursday !

Well, either he is happy and busy downloading the internet or he has been abducted by aliens?
