8ta LTE network details

8ta head Amith Maharaj provides details about the company’s LTE plans, including their free trial in Gauteng
 
I wonder how relevant copper line based ADSL will be in the foreseeable future. People(within LTE covered areas) will probably opt for LTE rather than wait for Telkom to install ADSL services. Makes sense as the speeds and latency are advertised as same/better than ADSL! Could do even more damage to Telkom's fixed line services!
 
Maharaj explained that users can expect high usage packages like 50GB and 100GB from 8ta, but that they will not offer uncapped services as the technology is simply not suited for an uncapped environment.

I wonder if the 50GB and 100GB packages will be per month or something like the current 60+60 deal.
 
Telkom needs to move to a pure convergence for the consumer voice line, data and mobile in one bill, with their backbone network they can be a force to be reckon with again

Telkom is planning an "over haul" of their 'legacy copper infrastructure" anyway. And if it helps 8ta, im sure they won't complain.
Apparently they (telkom) plan to deploy more than 3 000 fibre distribution cabinets across SA in the next three to five years.

I don't think it will do that much damage, remember that theoretical max is SHARED. So your true speed is not going to be anything close to that especially in dense urban areas! The current high cost of mobile data is limiting the bottleneck in spectrum. I would much rather have a fibre or VDSL copper link to my house/business than a shared wireless link!

Well in my opinion I feel LTE will be much suited for our internet usage such as gaming etc.But affordability will be a key in order for it to replace ADSL and at least 50% of the maximum theoretical speed .

I'm assuming there'd be less users on the LTE network compared to the 3G network for atleast the next 12 months, so speeds should be constant.
 
Anyone care to give a guess on how much those 50GB to 100GB data packaged will cost per month? Otherwise exciting stuff coming up for the consumer especially if price is the determining factor.
 
More importantly when will we know if our application was successful?
 
If theres an ADSL alternative, Im game, anything around the 4 - 8Mbps mark is good for me, if the data cost is in line with ADSL, and I dont have to pay the stupid 143 rand Telkom line rental + ADSL circuit rental .. then I say .. "Ill make do .. Ill have 1 thx"

I just hope they dont sell this whole "value" rubbish .. packages start at 100GB and go to 200GB, then they forget about joe average whos quite happy with 25GB
 
ADSL isn't an option for me as telkom refuses to install lines in my suburb due to cable theft. And it's not like I stay in the bush or anything, I'm walking distance from the East rand mall

That doesn't make it a viable fixed line alternative, just a nice short term bargain (if the pricing is is good). Imagine they do uncapped similar to ADSL, how quickly would it become slow as everyone is sharing the link.

Basically is will be a good alternative to low usage users and for mobile, but for higher consumption users and those that need a more reliable connection fixed line is always going to have a big market. Let's hope the MSAN roll out happens quickly and we can get faster, cheaper fixed line services!
 
Curious to note that my house was (just) covered by 8ta's 3G when I signed up at launch. Today when I checked I see it is not covered by 3G and even less by LTE, yet I have 40% indoor HSPA+ signal strength without any funny signal enhancements.
 
The problem Telkom have is that it got a lot of legacy infrastructure, which also need upgrading, and users/businesses to be moved.

Same goes for MTN and Voda.

8ta and CellC have fairly new networks, so it's easier to upgrade.

I have had plenty techies tell me this is what they are aiming for, to eliminate the need for copper.

However your statement about it doing 'damage' to Telkom' fixed line services is invalid as 8ta = Telkom
