8ta oblivious about slow internet speeds

I reported a problem with 8ta on 9 February, that's about 7 weeks ago now, regarding horribly slow internet speeds. I'm talking about days where speedtests drop to 0.2Mbps and below.

I've done numerous speed tests and discovered that internet speed is fine during the day time / office hours, but after 5pm, connection speed drops to below 0.5Mbps on the downstream. We're not here during the day, so it's kind of useless having fast internet during the day.

This is clearly to do with a congested network, yet 8ta now want to fiddle with installing antenna's, I don't know where, but this isn't a problem with signal, their network is congested. In my opinion, they need more hardware to be able to cope with the high amount of connections.

They sent a technician to my house, who apparently found nothing wrong, they also have given me two reference numbers for the same case, yet, after 7 weeks no resolution. It's just not coming to a conclusion, and I'm fed up with having to deal with them.

I have a 24 month contract with them, but I'm wondering, what are my rights in terms of cancelling this contract? I feel that they are not entirely in breach of this contract, as ICASA's pathetic guidelines state that broadband speed is defined to be 0.25Mbps, so they could argue that "I should consider myself lucky I have internet" slightly faster than ISDN.

Nonetheless, I feel I can get a better deal with another provider, I'm looking at exploring ADSL again, as when I compare our ADSL connection speed of about 7Mbps with our Afrihost connection at work, I can get a lot more value for my money.

I believe I should have the right to use the service provider that gives me the best deal and value for my money.

You have the right to remain silent. Ravings are appropriate in Cell C section. :) :) :)

You have the right to use the service provider that gives you the best deal and value for your money. So why you didn't test value of this network using prepaid SIM and bundles before signing contract? I guess, you didn't exercise your rights.

I had some similar issues over the long weekend. Last night I downloaded a 10MB file in less than 2 seconds.

I did test the quality of the network, and 12 months ago, speeds where blistering fast. Network speeds gradually deteriorated over the past few months, supposedly because 8ta has kept on adding customers to their network, congesting it more and more over time.

So sajunky, I don't really know how you got to the assumption that I didn't test the product. I'm not an idiot.

It's not only you, I'm in this same boat. For the past few weeks it's has been absolutely unusable. I gave up complaining, because the is simply no willingness or they can't fix the problem. I'm glad my contract is coming to the end soon and I won't be renewing. Who knows, maybe when they introduce lte and speed are decent I will be persuaded to give them another try.

Funny thing is, I've another 10gb which I use with my tablet and at work I'm getting amazing speeds, speeds I use to get at home. Tower congestion is the only answer.

Yep, it's definitely congestion on the tower. I hope LTE will solve the issue, but unless it's done right, people will probably just download more stuff with faster a connection, and we sit with the congestion issue all over again.

It seems like their testing their hardware during the day when nothing is happening on the network, and everything seems normal, so they think we're telling them a BS story, just because we have nothing better to do.

If you ever tested, you would write about it. And "gradually deteriorated over the past few months"? Is the same as "about 7 weeks ago now, regarding horribly slow"?
I read and believe what you wrote. Don't shot the messenger.

sajunky, why don't you rather stop participating on this thread, because your comments are hardly useful, and in no means contribute to the original matter of the subject.

I have a 24 month contract with them, but I'm wondering, what are my rights in terms of cancelling this contract?

My question was about what my rights are in terms of cancelling this contact, I wasn't seeking council from you or anyone about how I failed to test the product, and how terribly my writing is and how politically incorrect I am.

I'm asking a sincere and honest question, and I believe the constructive answers from others will not only be helpful to me, but also to others that sit in the same boat as me.

If you got nothing better to do than criticise, then kindly stick a sock in it.

The 7 week period that you are so pedantic about, has nothing to do with the time it took the connection speed to deteriorate. It's simply the time the complaint has been open with 8ta, without resolution. The problem has persisted for a MUCH longer time than the complaint has been open for.

Your rights are defined in T&C. Not in ICASA/CPA, etc. You forfeit your rights in the moment you put your signature on the document which doesn't comply with CPA (and this fact had been announced by authorities).

OK, to cancel your contract you must pay extra circa R800, in addition to current month bill, AFAIK

Joesef, you will come to realize something about MyBB. You get outstanding help from certain people, and others tend to play everyone off as useless idiots. It's the Jhb mentality. I'm from Jozi, and faced with it every day. But there are a lot of guys on here who will actually help you out without scorning you for your questions. :)

Getting help is easy when question is clearly defined (even a stupid one). When someone post looks like raving, with no indication what OP wants to achieve, in the best scenario receives no reply, like here.
