8ta Router

I actually tested that router last week (the Telkom one) and it kept dropping my wifi and 3g signal. Apparently they know about these issues. Then I tried their Netgear DGN 2200 router from Telkom but could not get it to work with the 2 dongles I have. Later found out that these routers are locked down with Telkom's firmware and you can only use 3 dongle models. Also you can only upgrade the firmware from Telkom's site and not the international sites.

I didn't buy mine from Telkom and it has none of the said issues. Wifi is certainly very stable, 3G has dropped once or twice in the last week but no more than it would when the dongle was connected directly to my PC.

I think HCOM is the BBBEEE company that supply Telkom with these routers. On their website they explain that they had to change the firmware as per Telkom's request. http://www.hcom.co.za
Custom firmware, fine. But it should be open for flashing a stock firmware. It is locked to 3 dongles sold by Telkom. It needs exemption, otherwise is illegal.

If i may ask, does it work even if you connect up to 5 devices? Am about to go get the 8ta 10 gig deal.

Rather get yourself the Huawei B683 3G router, it can handle 32 wireless connections and 28.8Mbps HSPA+ speeds. :)

And while Vodacom is asking R2000 for it, 8ta is now selling it for R1198.

Go get it!

It is a bargain, from 8ta, and works very well with Vodacom, MTN, and 8ta, nearly as good as my K4605 modem most places and networks.

Thanks for the answers to my previous questions. Was also just curious about the difference between the cheaper routers like this Tenda or the TP-link or the pricier Belkin units. I'm only wanting to share a 3g connection wirelessly to 2 or 3 devices. Actually the TP-link one's look like the best reasonably priced option. Is shelling out extra worth it?

Got the TP-Link MR3420 from Uniterm direct, nice quick response from them and a good price on the unit with the mybb discount. Connected the Huwai E1820 dongle with 8ta sim, but it wasn't detected at first. Updated the firmware on the Router, then selected the 8ta settings in the quick setup page after which it connected.

Just one thing I noticed was that upload tests on Speedtest.net took a long time to initialize and were quite slow, even when tested this morning. They were usually a bit faster with the dongle connected directly.

Also - the connection strength in the TP-link dashboard is at 45% whereas with the dongle's dashboard (plugged directly into the pc) it's at 100%. Is that normal?

See first post in this thread:

% of what? I think different software can give you a different percentage for the same signal strength. Better to measure in dBm.

CellC & Mobile partners dashboard both show full signal strength (5 bars or 100% if I mouse over it) whereas the TP-LINK dash only shows 45%. But yeah - not really an issue. Cheers.
