Recently got a 8ta usb modem for some internet and stuff.
Quite happy with the performance and need to connect it to other devices in the house.
So please help me with a router thats got good down and upload speeds.

I've got a TP-Link MR3220. Works like a charm.Available online from Uniterm Direct. They give discount to MyBB members too.

Quick question re. these routers: How you you manage the (3g) connection once the dongle is plugged into the router as there's no dashboard like there would be if it was plugged directly into the pc?

The router pretty much has most of the networks settings built in so you don't really have much configuring to do. Unfortunately most also don't have a USSD interface to buy bundles, check balances etc. With 8ta at least you can go to onnet.8ta.com and it let you do that stuff.

I am more than happy with the TrendNET router I have purchased from TakeAlot.com.

I'm using it to connect to the Internet with my Netbook as well as phone.

So when the dongle is plugged into the router - does it initiate the 3g connection automatically?

You might have to configure your network settings (MTN, Vodacom, Cell C). I chose MTN for 8ta, it works fine.

Ok with 8ta I get intermittent disconnections and I have to manually re-connect. A problem a lot of people seem to have. So with the router - when that 3g connection drops, will it automatically re-connect?

Ruters have usually such option. There are applications on PC capable to reconnect too.

I have also been looking at 3g routers for my dongle and having read these forums, it was a toss up between the Tenda from Scoop or the TP-Link from Esquire. Doing some research and downloading the datasheet for both products I noticed how very similar they looked (the productsheets and the units, that is). So I wonder if these are the same products in a different casing.

I just bought myself one of these: http://www.dlink.co.in/products/?pid=452

Works beautifully, keeps the connection alive and doubles as an ADSL router when Telkom will finally install a line for me :D

I actually tested that router last week (the Telkom one) and it kept dropping my wifi and 3g signal. Apparently they know about these issues. Then I tried their Netgear DGN 2200 router from Telkom but could not get it to work with the 2 dongles I have. Later found out that these routers are locked down with Telkom's firmware and you can only use 3 dongle models. Also you can only upgrade the firmware from Telkom's site and not the international sites.

They will automatically reconnect when the connection is dropped. What I am experiencing every now and then, is that even though the modem is connected to the network, there is no Internet access. I have to reset the router then. This is pretty annoying. This is not a router issue though, but a network issue :(

It is called device firmware locking. It should be illegal like cellphone locking. Did Telkom received exemption?

I had the same problem with the D-Link router that I was testing, in that it lost connection, and even after rebooting the router I would still not have internet access. Then after a while I would suddenly have internet access. I have an older Netgear 3g modem as well and when I attach the dongle to it then I do not experience any of those disconnect issues. So in my case it definitely is the modem and not the network.
