8ta starting to throttle 10GB users ?

I joined 8ta in November 2011 with their 10GB /month contract. I have been as happy as ever with this deal, speeds have been excellent and coverage very good in my home town., however....

Something happened at midnight last night - at 11.45 pm, 8ta went off. There was still a strong signal from 8ta, but I could get no data. Then at 11.30 this morning, 8ta started working again (12 hours later), however....

Since it started working again, I am getting great speeds for general browsing, email etc. But when I try to download something (I was downloading a 60MB magazine) this downloading has been going at an agonizingly slow 8.0 KB/sec. While the file has been downloading (has taken more than an hour now), I have been surfing at very fast speeds.....while the download is terribly slow.

This has led me to think - is 8ta throttling speeds when doing downloads ? is it even possible to throttle downloads, and allow full speeds for email and web browsing ?

I have been thinking the same thing. This has happened to me about a week ago, browsing is tolerable (not blazingly fast as it used to be), and downloads have dropped so much that I am lucky if I get 25KB/s (used to get 400KB/s) :mad: If they are indeed throttling users, I WILL cancel my debit order and they can blacklist me all they want.
 
man this is not cool, i wanted to buy the package this weekend...

Very unwise. this might affect your future credit applications. Rather cancel the contract based on the fact that you are not getting what you signed up for. You can do this via National Consumer Commission...

I started downloading a 60 MB file 4 hours ago.....it is still busy downloading it, speed has dropped to 6 KB/sec !!!!!!! that is slower than dialup. YET, when I browse the internet with the same connection to 8ta, pages are opening lightning fast.

If anyone else is experiencing throttling by 8ta when downloading a file, yet getting good speeds for browsing, please tell us. I am not sure if this is something locally in my area or nationwide

I have just done a speed test. My 8ta connection is giving me 50ms with download speed of 7.84 Mbps and upload of 0.89 Mbps - fantastic !!!!
And when I download a file I am getting 6 KB/sec, that is crazy :mad:

It is possible to differentiate between normal surfing and downloads - all they do is set a filter on files above a certain size, and you're throttled.

It could, however, be the source from which you're downloading the file that is impeding your DL speed. Many factors come into play, when DL'ing from sites, and sometimes I get massive 400Kbps DL speeds on 4Mbps ADSL, other times I get a pathetic 16Kbps from the same site.
 
I got it pretty early on too (Augustish, maybe) and also no complaints on speed ... not blistering, but a Youtube video wouldn't need to buffer and average download was around 2.5mbps with peaks double that.

In the past few weeks it's halves and like others have said, browsing is alright - but downloading and Youtube isn't great anymore.

This is terrible, Telkom. :mad: What was I thinking. If it looks too good to be true, it usually is. But no, 10GB for R199 p/m .....MUST GET!
 
Or maybe their international bandwidth is saturated ... :/

I've picked up a similar issue (see the thread entitled "Daytime Congestion Issues") but the 8ta rep assured me there is no form of shaping going on. Beginning to doubt that more and more now.

i have also realized that when i am downloading torrents, i can't browse at all
 
I’ve noticed last days of the month are usually worse, I’m thinking it may be network congestion due to guys trying to move remaining gigs before midnight or it could just be 8ta deliberately throttling us.

This would be because torrents are using all your available bandwidth. ;) A torrent running at full speed (what is available to it) will kill your browsing.
 
Aaaahhh, and just when i am Ready to get the i5 promo, i read this ??

so guys and ladies, what would you recommend ?? try 8ta and sign up a 2 year contract for a great price ?? or look else where ??

Haha that issue is a pain in the ass hey?

Are you using uTorrent?

If so go to -Options, Preferences, and de-select apply rate limit to transport overhead.

That worked for me, never changed my down speeds and i was able to browse without tat annoying issue.

I was watching some videos last night, around 7pm, youtube the videos were playing fine without the need to buffer and then halfway through the one it started to slow down drastically, signal strength was the same as it was minutes ago when i was getting good speeds. so I am not sure.

But honestly people, 10GB for R199 and an additional 10GB for R100 and you complain?
I love this network, sure it has its ups and downs but it is the best offering on the table at the moment...

My torrent downloads are around 100Kbps - 500Kbps with the odd fluctuation up to 2Mbps and then down to 0.8Kbps.

I do not care They are giving me data at such an affordable price, Its Just Me - You'd be stupid not to go for this.
