Hello all. I am sitting with a very strange issue, one of which I am not sure how to resolve, so I thought I would put it out here for all the clever online peoples to have a look at, to potentially offer solutions (Or to maybe even just tell me that I'm not alone)

We have been with Cool Ideas for years, and have been very happy with their customer service, as well as the services they offer. We had been getting our fiber through Cool Ideas, but after moving to a complex without fiber earlier this year, we have had to settle for swapping over to a uncapped fixed LTE service.

When we received the MTN LTE SIM card from CISP, we were pleasantly surprised with the speeds we were getting. Download Speeds between 60-120Mbps (One test went as high as 145Mbps!). We miss the stability and latency of fiber, but things were good for a while

Then all of a sudden, we started noticing a strange pattern. In the mornings, our download speeds appeared to be throttled to 50Mbps, which was not the end of the world, but at around midday, this throttling worsened to reduce our speeds to ~8Mbps! Once this behaviour started, it persisted every day for a few weeks. The same pattern of ~50Mbps in the morning, ~8Mbps in the afternoon until the next morning. In this time I had been speaking with Cool Ideas to try to resolve this issue, but seeing as it's an MTN service, finding a solution seemed problematic. At first, MTN's solution consisted of "refreshing my line", and after a few times of that not doing anything, they switched to blaming my router. (I opted to use my own ZTE MF286R, to not be tied in to a 12 month contract for my LTE) I doubt it's the router, as my cell phone's prepaid SIM card gets me close to 100Mbps, (-As well as the Vodacom fixed LTE SIM I have since purchased to get me through the afternoons)

At this point, I PM'd @PBCool here on MyBB and explained the situation, and the following week I got a call from Cool Ideas saying that they have had a similar issue once before, just a few months back. That case got resolved by sending a new SIM card and creating a whole new service, and cancelling the previous one, which they wanted to attempt for me. I naturally agreed to go for it, as nothing else was working.

The next day (15th May), I received a brand new MTN SIM, couriered to my place of work. When I got home from work, I did a speed test with the old SIM (got 10.7Mbps - See screenshot attached), swapped in the new SIM, and did another speed test and got a whopping 92.45Mbps download speed. So that surely points to a defective SIM card or line, right? Our speeds seemed to be back to normal for the rest of May, with the LTE being more in line with what I was expecting.

Well, unfortunately the problem has returned since the beginning of this month (June '25). Exact same symptoms. ~50Mbps in the morning, which then drops to ~8Mbps in the afternoon.

I'm at a bit of a loss. It surely can't just be bad luck? I don't think it's realistic to have to get a new SIM every month? I also feel like the fact that it looks like it pops up at the beginning of the month should point to something?

Just a few notes; after receiving the second SIM, I didn't change anything at all in my router settings. The routers placement has also not changed. It's always been in the same spot, connected to a Poynting XPOL 6 external antenna. Whether the external antenna is connected or not makes no difference to the speeds, I just get a much better signal to the router with the antenna plugged in. The throttling can also not be a FUP thing, as number 1, we are not typically downloading a lot, and number 2, the second time this issue started was the beginning of the month. Not sure if it's important or not, but I am in George, Western Cape.

Anyone had a similar issue? Or have any ideas?

TL;DR - I am on a uncapped unlimited fixed LTE service with Cool Ideas (MTN), but being subjected to a 50Mbps throttle in the mornings, and a ~8Mbps throttle from midday until the next morning. No-one seems to know why.

Just an edit; I double checked on our speedtest history, and the problem actually started again from the 21st of May already (Not the beginning of June) So the new SIM worked correctly for about 5 days.

That's an odd one; perhaps a faulty batch? Check if the SIM card numbers are decidedly similar.
Hell, maybe the heat from the router is causing something, I can only surmise.
Edit: Could even be a site configuration issue based on congestion stats?

Thanks for the reply!

The SIM card numbers aren't too similar, but I wouldn't immediately disregard the bad batch theory.

My next step is probably to accept Cool Ideas' router deal to rule out my router being the issue. Would probably be the most convenient if that turns out to be the solution. I just really don't want to be stuck paying for this service for a year, if I'm going to be limited to these speeds.

I also thought it might be a site issue, but I would think that after all the back and forth that MTN would pick something like that up?

I got an email this morning from Cool Ideas asking for 3 x screenshots of my speed tests again...

HI there @Attic. Thank you for the detailed issue description.

I am very familiar with both cases, (yours and the other customer), and yes, it is a very strange issue which we have yet to find a root cause for.

The first case we had is still resolved after the Sim was swopped, which makes your case even more odd if it only lasted 5 days after the Sim Swop.

First case was in the Free State, and now yours in George, so I don't think its isolated to an area.

I had a look at your ticket, and MTN suggests setting your Router on 4G-only, and seeing if that makes any difference, however I am going to discuss this issue further internally to see if there is something we are missing.

Thank you for your continued support and patience in this regard.

Ask them to pull congestion stats for the serving site, if the traffic levels are over 70% after hours, then you're gonna have some problems bud..

With the first case we had, it was about 3 months back and forth with MTN, however we did get traffic Stats for the Tower from them, and was well within normal ranges.
I also don't think its a congestion issue, as its 12pm on the dot, every day. Thus it appears to be something else

Thanks a bunch for the reply, and the attention to the issue @CoolEscalator . I really do appreciate it.

The chap who has been helping me with this issue did give me a call this morning, and mentioned MTN suggesting that I switch the router to 4G only. I have done this, but so far, not much change. Will keep an eye on it, and check it out in the morning again.

That is indeed a curious situation! You reckon some "data shedding" is happening here, I wonder?
Send me the tower ID and the MSISDN in question, lemme see if I can liaise with the planner in the region, maybe there's something simple that we're missing here...
Just a disclaimer - I don't look after George, I'm up here in Gauteng, so my pro bono assistance might be limited, but let's at least try?

Appreciate the assistance thus far, Thank you.
We will chat further over email.

As it's weekend, I could (and actually remembered) to do speedtests as it hit midday today, to catch the drop-off in action, and my speeds change at EXACTLY 12AM and 12PM each day. These speedtests were from a few minutes ago, and show the drop at exactly midday.

It would be interesting if you had a other fixed LTE sim to test.

Cause man that is very weird

So, as a bit of an update to anyone following this (or maybe for people in the future), the awesome peoples at Cool Ideas sent me another new SIM card, and a new router. I have attached a screenshot with the speed tests between the 2. I did two tests with the old SIM and router, before switching over and doing another 2 tests with the new hardware. As you can see, the difference is quite staggering! Last time the new SIM arrived, it was also a massive improvement, so I will monitor over the next couple of days and see what happens. The old SIM is going back to Cool Ideas for testing, so it would be interesting to hear if anything comes off that. Hopefully this will be the end of the issue.

Good support from them as well. If you had this issue with mtn you would have been out of luck.

Thank you for confirming. Yes I see our team has arranged for the old Sim to be sent back for testing.
I'm glad all is fixed again :) I do hope it stays fixed.

Hello again. I might be jumping the gun a bit, but it looks like the problem has returned as of yesterday afternoon.

Up until then we were getting consistent speeds of over 100Mbps (More like between 150 and 190Mbps), but yesterday afternoon it dropped to about 20 or so. I thought (and still hope?) that it's just a co-incidence, and the speeds are just a bit slower at the moment, but testing now this morning it shows to be at a hard 50Mbps, consistent with what I was having before. Will still keep an eye to confirm, but trying to catch it as soon as it occurs.

Is it at all possible to look back and see if the tower I was connecting to has changed between today and the 24th? I don't even know if that's a thing to be honest.

Could it be my external antenna? I just aimed it at the spot that improved my signal the most. Unplugging it doesn't seem to change anything, except drop my signal to -100dbm.

I have attached a screenshot with my last couple of speedtests done on my pc, as well as a screenshot showing my current signal strength/quality.

Hopefully I'll come back tonight and report that this was a false alarm...

Hi there, Apologies for the delay.

I'm still pending feedback on the Sim card testing were doing on your old Sim, but I really hoped that 3rd times the charm :(

We're going to have another look a this and revert back to you via your ticket.
Your time and patience is much appreciated.

Just an update.

Unfortunately, still not winning.

MTN came around for a site visit yesterday afternoon (Around 14h00). The chap didn't chat much, but on their 'control' LTE SIM, he was getting around 280Mbps!? And then when switching over to my setup, with my SIM, he was getting around 4Mbps.

He seemed quite interested in my external antenna, and took some pics of it. Apparently one of his superiors will phone me sometime today and "sort this issue out because it's something to do with the antenna". I had considered this in the past, and run my internet without the external antenna for a week, with no changes, so I don't know. The last SIM that was giving issues went back to Cool Ideas for testing and they were getting the same issues that I was having, and they obviously don't have my router or antenna.

Could me running the SIM with the external antenna somehow mess with the SIM permanently? So perhaps I receive the SIM working, then after running it for a week, the SIM freaks out permanently from the external antenna?

Will update if anything changes.
