The turbo's give issues.

But I'll buy one :)

The 1.9TDi motors is said to be very good. Just have the turbo checked.
Like all turbo cars, let the thing idle a bit after you stop before you switch it off.
It gives the turbo chance to cool down. :D

EXACTLY!! The turbos always get the blame because the people who drive them treat them like non turbo cars!!

Um.

Why don't Porsche, Volvo or other makes break as often? There is an issue with that 1.9TDI - and it's not the driver.

Thought the idling on a turbo was so it could slow down from the huge RPM it is doing?

Erm...I don't think we are looking at the same number of cars on the road just for starters.

The new turbos all have an extra cooling system that is supposed to carry on working after you have switched off, but I am pretty sure that the average VW turbo buyer even knows that they should let it idle for a bit...just blame4 the car when it blows!

It's actually the smaller TDi that has issues, the 1.9 is quite good. :D

The 'issue" only became a "problem" when VW recalled their cars to replace turbos in case they broke...you would probably find that 90% of the ones that were replaced would still be happily running around if there hadn't been the recall.

Now the poor bloody car ends up with a crappy reputation...........

So if there were the same number of Volvo trubos on the road as 1.9TDI, they're have the same failure rate ... ?

Why have VW actually agreed to replace the turbo? Why did they pull the car from showrooms? They actually acknowledged a problem with the turbo itself.

If there were the same number of Volvos and Porsches on the roads as there were VW's you would certainly not have such a skewed view of things, yes.

Well done to VW for pulling something off the floor if they thought that there was an inherent problem...which has now been sorted out....just seems to me, however, that people will go on and on saying that they have turbo problems even though the problems have been sorted out!

It's not only my mind ...

VWSA spokesperson Bill Stephens told CityDrive his company had experienced incidents of “turbo failure”.

Have you not read the hundreds of drivers that have experienced this 2 or 3 times ... ?

Yeah Dolby, I see endless GTIs and TDIs standing on the side of the road broken

Anyway Pitbull I would have bought it from you (for around R35k) had it been a 16V :)

No but you continue to ignore the fact that the cars were recalled and that the turbos were replaced...it seems to just be easier to say that all VW's have crappy turbos, and IGNORE the fact that the crappy ones were replaced with new ones.

From this day on you will be telling people not to touch VAG turbos because they give trouble!!

Just like the people who ignored the fact that VW sorted out heating problems in the first Golfs, by replacing the German radiators with SA ones back in 1979....from then on nobody could drive a Golf without some bright spark coming up and telling them that "Golfs have overheating problems, you know".

The problem has been fixed...let's move on!!

AHHH but didn't you KNOW that ALL 16V Golfs are TERRIBLY expensive to maintain, and ALL 16V's need to be rebuilt every 10 000 km???:D

Even if it did I don't care man, it would be 10 000km of driving awesomeness!! :p

LOL...sorry, I had to put that in...:D

I would love a decent 16V to play with!! ;)

Actually...just thinking about it...imagine some Turbo 16V's, and half this forum would have you believe that cannot drive 5 km without seeing at least 10 broken down on the road!! ;)

I never liked the 16v that is the reason I bought this 8v and fixed it up so nicely :)

But everyone has their own little favourite :p

I wonder if the 1.9TDI turbo failures are the reason VW are below average in the JDPowers survey?

Or perhaps the tacky quality of the Touereg (R600,000+)?

Or perhaps they added the Citi into the equation, which dropped the entire average? :/

well it wouldn't happen on the "proper" brands.. as they let the turbo run after being shut off so it still has an oil feed so it doesnt burn out...

so yes it was VW's fault for not doing this.

As much as 4cers opinion doesn't usually count because he has an Alfa, I have to agree with him here ;)
