My nephew got 5 distinctions and an Allan Gray scholarship to study Mech Eng at Wits next year :)

Sadly next week will be a different story for most SA puplic schools.

Johannesburg - A total of 98.2% of students who wrote the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations under the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) have passed , the board announced on Saturday.

"Last year's pass rate (was) 98.15%," said the IEB in a statement. All the candidates that passed achieved a mark that would permit them to register at tertiary institutions.

"83.6% of the cohort achieved entry to degree study and 12.96% qualified for entry to diploma study and 1.64 percent achieved entry for study at the Higher Certificate level," said the IEB.

The IEB is a national independent assessment agency which offers examinations for various client schools separate from the state and provincial examination boards.

The agency is accredited by education monitoring body, Umalusi.

More students wrote the final exams under the board this year.

"An additional 1212 learners wrote the IEB examination compared with 2011.

"[A total of] 8959 full time and 534 part time candidates from 183 schools across the country wrote the examinations in 2012," said the IEB.

The increase came after nine new institutions joined the board and more students were registered in existing schools.

The majority of the students came from the Gauteng province.

The province has 90 schools affiliated to the IEB and had registered over 5000 students for the NSC exams

I wrote IEB exams at a public school (Hyde Park). I passed but not like your nephew :D Congrats

Tell him gratz getting into Wits. Also if he needs a favor from someone a little further up (tips/tricks/consultation etc.), just shoot me a PM.

We should seriously start a MyBB club at Wits.

However, I don't really approve of the way students prepare for the matric exams, it's the system that's the problem actually. When I was in matric, I would spend a considerable amount of time looking at past exam papers to see how questions are asked and to also see the questions that are most likely to be asked. I would then spend more time studying only the chapters where I thought exam questions would come from instead of studying everything, knowing everything and then being tested that way. I don't know if the IEB students prepare the way students from other public schools prepare?

Well my kids will certainly go to a IEB school but what's sad is the price difference required for it.
 
I never saw a difference between those who went to public schooling (good model C schools) and those who went to IEB schools at varsity. After the first week both realize how little they really know.

That's awesome! I'm studying electrical eng at wits atm, so if your nephew needs pointers ;).

perhaps agentrfr is right, maybe we should start a mybb wits club!

In matric I also spent most of my time going through past Maths/Physics papers from the beginning of the year. Every time we covered a chapter at school, I would seek typical exam questions from many past papers. I did all of this while watching Knight Rider and the A-Team. :D

I am quite open to this! The club I mean.
 
I changed from OBE to IEB in grade 10, definitely a change for the better, not sure if I would have even passed on OBE due to the low quality of teaching and syllabus.
