Hi

I have a msi 9800gt 512mb but want to add another one, can i buy a 1gb card or do i have to buy a 512mb card

Thanks.

the nakedpeanut has been proven wrong :D

See if you can get hold of a 2nd-hand 512MB 9800gt, otherwise just go for a new graphics card like an HD 6950 or HD 6870, which would be even faster than 2x 9800gt's in SLI.

Yeah, according to both the GPU sites, the cards need to be the same.
The only concession is that they do not need to be from the same manufacturer.

Basically you can mix a Gigabyte 9800GT and an ASUS 9800GT, but both MUST BE 9800GT, 512MB.

Thanks for the replies.

I can sell the card and buy a beter card, but I probably going to upgrade to sli(2X 6850) and then I also need to sell my mobo because it only has 1 pci-e slot.
How much can I ask for a MSI 9800GT 512MB, MSI P45-NEO(almost 2 year old).

R750 gfx card
R600 mobo

Why oh why a dual card set up?

What power supply have you got? Probably needs upgrading too.

Just go for the VTX3D HD 6950 @ R2507 from Prophecy Shop, instead of 2x HD 6850's.

You should still tell us what power supply you've got. Please include the brand & model.

tis a sad day  but not really :p
amd you can mix them up, sli needs to be the same
It is true that AMD allows it and Nvidia don't...

I should have given more explanation in my answer.. It is possible if you have a Lucid Hydra chip on your mobo. Although I highly doubt you do since it's very new! haha :D
From what i've read there are different versions of the chip that allow you to run say a 5850 with a 6850 or 460 with 470 or even 5850 with a 470... <-- but I must so some more research on this.

In the above cases - You need to make 200% sure that you have ALL the connectors needed. Adapters =/= Good idea if you don't know EXACTLY what you're doing.

Anyway, the PSU for dual cards would have to be at a MINIMUM 600W. And thats pushing it!
750W and upwards to be safe.

I have a CX500 PSU

Maybe I must sell the 9800gt and buy one 6850, and later upgrade my MOBO and PSU to support CF6850

I'd just skip all the hassle and get a 6950 or 570 if I was you... thinks of prophecy prices on vtx3d 6950's....

Well if you're gonna go single card, spend the extra R200-400 and get the HD6970 or GTX570/80.

The 6950 and 6970 sound very nice, but my budget is R2000(6850 and maybe new PSU) and if I take the 6950, I would also have to upgrade my PSU(im borrowing my friends CX500)
I have a huntkey 550w greenpower in the closet(my friend uses a huntkey 550w greenpower with his 5770, he says it runs smoothly)or must I buy the CX500 from my other friend to power the 6850.

Thanks.
