what is the cost out of interest?
and where was he supposed to save all that content to?
was this for his own personal cost or is it the companies?

I would refuse to pay it. How in heavens name can you even do such data transfer and why the hell did someone not pick it up on the network side? Surely there was something wrong.

OP time to suggest a new 9TB data bundle from Vodacom in this week's competition thread?

thats odd, and scary!
we also have a few data modem accounts with Nashua, but for us, all voice and data contracts are limited to 3times normal subscription... so, once modem goes over 6Gb data, account is suspended, and need to contact them to lift it

If he did, 9Tb where did he store all the data??? 9 x 1tb external drives?
IMHO I think nashua has a major billing issue.

Either that, or some awesome malware was uploading. Though it would still be pretty much impossible to do that much on an upstream connection. Or rather, more impossible than download.

I would NOT like to be in these shoes....

Or 3x3TB internal. You'll be surprised what some hi end systems have this days. I have 2x2TB in raid zero and want to add another 4TB. Some chaps spend most of their income on gaming systems. 10TB hi end systems is not that uncommon nowadays. 3D movies are 50GB a shot and for a few dollar a month you can get access to TB and TB of porn. But you have to download it within the subscription month. A 42mbit USB modem can do about 35mbit/sec continuous under ideal conditions. He averaged 28mbit/sec. Download programs help with organising what and when should be downloaded. No big deal. Why did Vodacom not pull the plug when the account went above 10million? Even big companies do not spend that much on internet per month. Probably the chap thought he got a free glitch and now . . .

On a 42mbps modem right next to a tower with an awesome upstream link and no other users etc etc it's possible but extremely unlikely something like that would ever happen accidentally. Otherwise just LOL, have some vaseline...

So Im thinking.

The company purchased this and gave it to a staff member. Ergo the company is responsible for the data usage and payments. Does that mean one person can close the doors and bankrupt a company with something as stupid as a 3G dongle?

I actually have about 200 clients using these (Vodacom stuff provided through IS). This is making my company rethink its entire strategy on 3G wireless contracts. Basically we are going to be closing them all. If we have a user that runs up a stupid bill like this. R18 million is enough to close down our entire company....

Personally I think its a bug.

If one of my accounts exceeded R200k alarm bells would be ringing all over the place. I would be on the phone and shtting myself to make sure that they could pay that. Now were talking millions. I just cant belive that someone at Nashua just shrugged their shoulders and said "Wow look at how much this jackass is downloading" and left it at that.

I would ask for logs and stats, as well as information on what websites where accessed.

You can put a cap on all accounts, if you dont do that you are placing yourself at risk.
Some companies also do a shared payment, first R1000 or whatever is covered by the company the rest is the employees responsibility.

This has been discussed en nauseum. The problem is on a data contract you actually cannot put a cap on it. It just switches over to oob rates.

Incorrect. On a phone contract you'd have to pay up and switch to some form of pre-paid. You can't put a cap on a MTN or Vodacom contract.

On a data contact Vodacom explained to me that if you start a session just before your cap is reached they won't cut you off until after that session is finished which could be days.
