A Dog Situation

Like others have said before if he can prove its his dog then give the guy his dog back.

I fail to see how he must pay you anything back seeing as he did not ask you to pay for or buy anything for the dog, you did that out of your own free will.

Imagine your dog gets out of your property and someone returns it with a diamond encrusted collar which you now have to pay for...

I know its not really the same but you spent money on the dog out of your own free will.

Vet bill and food should be paid for... you can't keep a dog and not feed it.

Did someone force him to take the dog to the vet or feed it?

Look, if it happened to one of my dogs I will gladly pay for the expenses but in my opinion I dont think you have the right to make the owner pay for those things as he never asked you to take care of the dog.

Then after seven weeks he doesn't get the dog back because he clearly doesn't care enough.

Out of curiosity... Who was taking care of the dog while the owner was away for... what was it... seven weeks?

I'm very suspicious of this person in fact being the owner and even more suspicious of the suitability of this person being a pet owner.

Why am I not seeing that the owner was away 7 weeks. Which post did I miss that in? All I got was owner was away when dog got out, and owner then found dog in Izzys yard 7 weeks later. Unless I missed something, not sure the owner was away for 7 weeks.

Seven weeks ago, I found a stray pittie outside my place with no tag or chip, but in good condition besides being quite dirty.

It's the first few words in the opening post of this thread...

Correct. Seven weeks referenced the date I picked up the dog only. Not sure how long the owner was away for.

Yeah, perhaps you might wanna read that again, but it does not imply the owner was away for 7 weeks.... just that he found the dog 7 weeks ago (and he was away when the dog got out).

Cool, I see lots of people are making judgements based on that so just trying to clarify. Well either way, good luck to the doggie :D

Most people who lose their pets don't take seven weeks to find them in the same neighbourhood.

Knocking on doors to raise awareness/concern tends to be one of the first things you do, surely?

I think it's safe to assume that he was away for a fair while if it took him this long to knock on IzZzy's door.

But you're right, I apologise, there isn't any certainty.

I'd keep the dog, the other oak sounds dodge, maybe he wants the pittie for fights?

I have no where near enough information to pass that type of judgement. The dog that I found and looked after for a couple of days was not found in a door to door campaign by the owner, but rather through a local area facebook page where someone on there knew the owner.

But you're right, I apologise, there isn't any certainty.
Yeah, thats my point :D Izzzy has the skills to filter out a BS`er, so Im sure he will do the right thing when they meet.

That's precisely what gets me raising eyebrows.

See, I don't get that at all...

Knock on doors to just raise some immediate awareness, put flyers up, visit your nearest vets and let them know (and again, put flyers up), go to your local SPCA and do the same.

I don't understand how anyone can be so nonchalant when they've lost a pet. In fact, who fails to chip their pets in this day?

Seven weeks from the moment the animal went missing, without ever once just canvassing his neighbourhood, or doing anything to just let people know his dog's missing and to keep an eye out? I can't wrap my head around that.

It goes back to my original argument: if this is the real owner, I struggle to see him as a suitable pet owner.

Yeah, thats my point :D Izzzy has the skills to filter out a BS`er, so Im sure he will do the right thing when they meet.

Yeah, I certainly hope so.

I would be very reluctant to let go of the dog myself. It's a **** situation to be in but the law will undoubtedly win if the man can prove that he is indeed the dog's owner.

Seven weeks ago, I found a stray pittie outside my place with no tag or chip, but in good condition besides being quite dirty.

I took him to my local vet (1km away) who kept him for a week, pending claim. After the week, they would place him in the care of a pitbull rescue organisation for rehoming. My fiance also put up posters in the area at the entrances of the two local shops. The vet manager contacted local pitbull rescue organisations to be on the alert if anyone reports a lost pittie. My fiance posted his photo to a local lost and found organisation on Facebook.

At the end of the week, my heart could not let go of him, and I decided to take him in. He has since settled in nicely with my other three dogs. He has been dewormed, vaccinated, chipped and tagged. He also has his own new bed and bowl :)

This afternoon, when the parlour came to wash the dogs, a guy happened to drive past and stopped. My fiance's sister was home at the time. He told her that the dog was his dog, and left his number. Apparently he was away at the time. He stays a few houses away from us.

What would you do in the scenario?

I feel that we did everything in our power to find his owner, without success. It is by pure chance that we (a) decided in the end to adopt him; and (b) the original owner stays close by. If he had been rehomed with other people, the old owner would never have seen him again.

The owner is a retard for wanting the dog back. He should come out and say it was his, but should advise you to keep it. a couple of weeks and now he sees his dog? Seriously? Fk him.

Meeting the owner at 11h00 tomorrow. When I called him, he sounded genuinely excited about his boy :)
