I was wondering how the Drifta works.

Do you insert a smartcard into it?
If not, cant anybody just go buy one and then use it to watch DSTV?

Can you watch TV on the Drifta at the same time as watching DSTV on your normal home PVR or will suing the one disable the other for the time the one is being used?

If this can be done anybody can just register a Drifta on a friend's, who has DSTV, name and then use it is'nt it?

Or am I missing something somewhere?

If not, cant anybody just go buy one and then use it to watch DSTV? NO - you need to activate it via Multichoice

Drifta works on a signal broadcast from the same broadcast mast as normal TV (provided by Sentech). The signal is digital instead of analogue. When your Drifta is activated by M/C, it works and it is not aware if any other device that is switched on working from a diffrent decoder, so using one won't switch of a another one. You can have a DSTV decoder and more than one drifta and all will work provided they are activated. Mobile TV from an enabled phone (not requiring a drifta) is distributed by the cell phone provider. You therefore do not need an internet connection either for a Drifta and it doesn't use any bandwidth on the internet other than updating its software. It therefore works similar to the way the old MNet decoders worked.

I hope this helps.

So it does'nt use any data because it doesnt connect to the internet?

So you just buy the thing and thats it? Not other costs?

which one is better then? the USb one or the other one?

1. You just buy it and thats it, provided you have a PC
2. I Prefer the one with the little arial as I can easily connect it to bunny ears or a coathanger or the outside thread of an outside antenna when the signal is weak.

It costs R36 pm or free if youre on dstv premium.

Si the resolution the same on both? Somebody said the USB one is lower than the other?

nope resolution the exactly the same, only diference is the usb one cant broadcast over wifi so not good for Ipod / Ipad or android

How to maximise the screen on a laptop? I've got the usb one.

Hi Guys,

I tried to understand all that has been written about Drifta and how is works. I am still not sure if I really understand all there is to understand. Please forgive me for asking these questions. I was under the impression that I need to have internet connection for the drifta device to work.

1) Do I need internet to be able to use drifta, especially to watch DSTV on a laptop/desktop?
2) I was reluctant to download the drifta app for my Galaxy S II because of the same reason as above. Will the app require data (internet) on my sammy for it to work?

Thanks for reading.

you do not require an internet connection, you just need to be in a coverage area.
