Hi Guys,

Ok so scenario is this my GF got a new iphone 4 yesterday as an upgrade... now i was playing around with it a lot yesterday, For my GF she wants things like themes and ringtones and pretty much a pretty phone

Now my questions are these:

1. I read alot about "jailbreaking" the phone what does this entail and what are the repercussions e.g. Warranty void

2. I have checked a few ways to conver music to ringtones but in the itunes i got there is no ringtones tab under library so anybody know how to do this

3. What apps do you people deem necessity

Thanks

Doesn't void your warranty to jailbreak. Then you can have themes. You have to be running iOS 4.0.1 though. If it's 4.0.2 or 4.1 out of luck.

Basically you take a song in iTunes, convert it to AAC, trim it to 40 sec and rename it as an m4r. (instead of m4a). There are tutorials on how to do this.

So many apps. Get a US account. Instructions on the first page of the iPhone tips/tricks thread. Then get a US iTunes voucher and buy some good apps.

i use iRinger for custom ringtones. import your song, cut & trim the bit you want, select fade-in's & outs - save the ringtone, it then puts it in the iTunes ringtone directory - select the ringtone in iTunes & sync phone. works brilliant.

Doesn't void your warranty to jailbreak.

Are you sure about this? I read a few weeks back that according to Apple it void your warranty. In the US its legal to jailbreak the phone, so we'll probably be the same

...maybe this is a stupid question, but here goes. when your data bundle is depleted on your iPhone, can't you top-up the data bundle? (buy data bundle through internet banking?)

Iphone 4

There are many apps available as free and pay downloads on the app store.

There are also many apps available to convert mp3 into ringtones which can then be uploaded to the iphone through Itunes.

Pretty sure Jailbreaking doesnt void the warrantee. Worse case scenario restore to factory default if a support issue arises.

Cool well i updated the OS to 4.1 yesterday :( didnt know i shouldnt of done that but anyway im sure they will make a way to jailbreak it soon as for mp3 ringtones i have watched all the tutorials but on my itunes there is no tab that says ringtones i will try when i get home to do the rest and post some screenshots

Hi guys i also have a question, i recently heard about the micro-sim requirement, im with mtn, what must I do to get one. I dont want to cut it as i would like the option to use it with my n900 when needed. Does MTN have an option that lets you keep your current sim card. Thanks

Not sure how possible that is, and if possible, what monthly charge will be linked to it. My suggestion is to get a microsim adapter and you can use your microsim in both devices (still trying to figure out what your n900 will offer on top of the iPhone. :)
Adapter is about R50-60. Someone on the forum @3Gee I think) sold them at some stage

You can get "dual sim" from MTN then you essentially have 2 sim cards that feed off the same contract.

Although "dual sim" has only just been launched by MTN and when i got my iphone 4 about 10 days ago, i wanted another micro sim for my ipad and the assistant at the MTN service centre told me "dual sim" will only be available in 2 weeks. So i would give MTN a call sometime this coming week and just mention "dual sim" and they should know what you talking about.

You can't void the warranty. If you do however take it in for a repair for example, just restore it to the "legit" IOS 4.x version. Jailbreaking isn't a one way ticket, you can unjailbreak.

... just restore it to ...
This might not be possible when you get to the point where you need to take it in for warranty repairs, though.

Depending who your service provider is you can do it online or calling customer care. I do that from time to time.

Thanks for this info, is there any subscription fee to this, or is it a straight one time payment for this option

I'm not 100% sure, just give MTN a call. Although i would assume that its just a once off payment for the sim card (my micro sim cost 110 bucks)
