A look at HTML5

forgot to mention webGL... Thats the 3D we are waiting for. Canvas 3D is not 3D hardware accelerated (in latest browsers only 2D accelerated)

Guess it's still early days but I watched played/watched a lot of the links thinking I was watching w3School tuts. Where are some REAL examples of HTML5's power?

Also, will HTML5 be capable of being encapsulated within one file?

HTML5 is really awesome and I got an application I'm redoing this year and HTML5 is a candidate - its for internal use so I can set the requirements.

Cant wait to rid my PC of Adobe and all their crap ware. The day I un-install Flash will be a great day indeed.

Alastair, this sounds very interesting, please may you do a follow up article on how well supported HTML 5 is by the different browsers including mobile browsers

Maybe that is why Apple refuses to use flash, not only for your reasons stated, but it is also buggy and memory intensive. RIP flash!!!

what do you mean by this? you can already save a page as a self-contained collection of files.
but then you lose server-side functionality.

it's probably more that apple is wanting to launch their own competitive product or feels threatened by adobe's domination of some or other market sector.
their rejection of flash made no sense - if you want to install carp software on your apple, why should they have taken issue?

Are you referring to iOS devices or Macs? Apple have definitely not rejected Flash on Macs. It's just not installed by default. This is the same as PC's! It's a good move because it forces one to get the latest version.

As for iOS devices, I think the abysmal performance of Flash on ARM vindicates Apples decision in that regard.

I mean does HTML5 have like a .swf extension? I have found that very useful for running offline training website etc.

With regards to the downfall of Flash, I'd be interested to see what Facebook's views on HTML5 are seeing as so many of their apps are Flash based.

you can save the page as "web page complete" but it's not going to really fix links between pages and may mess up some of the formatting. html isn't really designed to run offline/outside of a webserver.
powerpoint is probably your best bet for an offline presentation.

perhaps you mean "so many of their third party apps are flash based". everything which is facebook runs entirely off html except for the their video playback and multiple file uploader.
i don't think they're about to put a lid on third party flash apps which have proven to be extremely successful.
