A million lost, and counting

This is alarming. If alternative technologies can steal fixed line customers there is something wrong with competition. What this tells me is that Telkom is not responsive enough and that Telkom's management couldn't give a rats ass about what happens to what is supposed to be the cheapest form of access in the market.

Wireless are for children and criminals, fixed line and other forms of fixed lines are for those that are serious about quality communications.
No, fixied lines are for those that love supporting a company that rips off the nation.

You can't change a need. You can change a want/desire, but a need, not so much.
For instance, you need oxygen to survive, suggesting changing it, isn't going to help.
I want/desire an ISP that supplies my needs other than Telkom, unfortunately, for my needs, none are currently available.
Stop downloading so much and playing games and get 3G or something. You'll still survive.

Maybe they are just happy with just Business and Government that have to have Fixed Lines?
Anyone else that leaves, oh well, they just catch him/her with a Cell Phone.

Rouxenator : What about the few of us who require low latency connections... where the latency doesn't spike?... hmmmm?

The problem is there is a lot of people out there saying :
- "Ja but it is all I could get so that is why I have Telkom".
- "But I play games and fixed copper is cool so I use Telkom".
- "They are still the cheapest for what I want to do".

And other excuses just to back this corporation that rapes our nation.
What service do you use?

Exactly - I went to the post office close to 5pm this afternoon and was ticked off with the long faces from the unfriendly staff who were sighing ever so loudly when I wanted to post something internationally - clearly something they know little about. Then I tried to pay by card and the machine wasn't working - you should have seen it / heard it in there... what's with these people - have they forgotten what it's like to be unemployed? Or maybe never experienced it? If you hate your job that much then just go elsewhere.

Telkom and the post office are one and the same and will never change until they are privatised... and don't tell me Telkom is a private company - they have NEVER had to work for ANYTHING.... EVER.

Fact: Telkom don't care that you don't like their service / prices or products... period.

Why should they care? They have no reason to be bothered. They are practically written into the budget each year... indirectly thanks to Ivy and co.

Lets assume I'm a sweet shop. I sell only Cadbury Chocolates.

It takes me, on average, 20 minutes to serve a customer. When they complain about slow service and melted chocolates, I don't do anything about it.

Now a rival sweet shop opens up in town. Not only do they also sell Cadbury Chocolates, they sell other varieties of sweets as well. Making them slightly more popular. One thing they have though is they serve their customers on average under 2 min.

What do you think I should do? Up the speed in which I service my customers or take on more stock of different variety of sweets?

Any moron would be able to see what you do in a case like that...

depends if you like melted choc or not :D

Rouxenator : I need a consistent ping of around 60ms to local machines...

Show me a wireless connection that can CONSTANTLY provide 60ms pings with a tolerance of about 15%...

If you're Telkom you increase the prices of your chocolates and fire the slightly incompetent staff and hire grossly incompetent staff to work the counter for half the salary. Then you get the government branch associated with the chocolate industry, lets call it the Independent Chocolate Authority of South Africa (ICASA), to declare that the other shop doesn't have the correct license and therefore isn't permitted to setup sweetshop-based infrastructure. After the heavy legal costs run them out of business you raise your prices again! Everybody wins... well OK not everyone... in fact only you win... but at least someone wins right?

When everything that happened finally hits the media you get the CEO of the Cadbury chocolate company (lets call him Alan Knott-Craig) to talk about the wonderful strides you have made for the country in terms of Cadbury's chocolate supplies.

The end.

Impossible, he was most likely downloading something also. I have 4 mb adsl and i get 25-35 ping.

When i was on 384k i got 65-75 ping. So that dude most likely had the connection blues that day.

Wireless will never work for low latency, too many variables. But lets hope it does improve.

Obviously you guys haven't tried WiMAX yet. I have a 1mg Wimax connection from Screamer and normally get between 20ms and 40ms ping times.

You don't need that but somehow you convinced yourself you do so I am not going to even bother with trying to convince you to not support an evil empire.

How can you say I don't need it when you have LESS than no idea what my requirements are?..

Have you ever dealt with applications that require the low latencies to keep data in synch etc etc etc?

I recently decided to send Telkom and email asking them why I have to rent two lines when its one piece of copper wire. They suggested some wireless solution. I told them it wasnt viable because I use my line for gaming and also use a lot of bandwidth. The cost per gig was R10 short of twice the price I pay for one now. I spoke with some idiot who didn't seem to know what I was on about.

All I want from Telkom is an answer as to why I have to rent the same piece of copper twice? Why cant they make one price, and I added that I didnt mean they should just add the two charges.

As soon as I can swap to a service where I can rent a dedicated ADSL line, or the "two" lines are properly priced, Telkom can go and get screwed. I'll send them my previous email chain as well... HOWEVER, the truth of the matter is that Telkom will offer a service where you can rent a standalone line, or at least reduce the costs of renting the ADSL line by R100, about a month before a competitor offers a product like that. ATM they dont "need" to, so they won't cause it makes them more money to pay bigger bonuses to the fat cat friends of various politicians.

Look, just trust me, you really don't need latencies that low.
