I just have a quick question - I am about to get ADSL for the first time and I see that you can get a DSL line from either Telkom or any of the other ISPs.

Now what I wanted to know is, is there any difference in getting the DSL line itself through telkom vs Afrihost vs VOX for example? Is the DSL line between these ISPs all the same thing and the "quality" of your ADSL experience only dependant on what data package you choose with your ISP.

So basically what I want to figure out is if I get VOX Fatpipe 50GB with a 4Mbps DSL line from VOX swell will there be any difference in speed etc etc if I were to get VOX Fatpipe 50GB with a 4Mbps DSL line from Telkom instead?

Speed will be the same. If there are any problems with the line you deal with your ISP. Instead of Telkom directly.

Also if you cancel your ISP account. It takes a while and is a hassle to move it back to Telkom.

hmmmm the main reason I ask is that Afrihost's 4Mbps line is the cheapest @ R279 where as Telkom and VOX are both at R300. I know is it only R20 a month but it was a consideration.

Put the line with the ISP so that if there is ever a problem they can't shove you off to Telkom as it's their problem.

If you split the two it's a world of pain as they point fingers at each other and do nothing.

Thanks for the tip - I guess it is easier to manage that way too. VOX DSL Line and Fatpipe here I come!

I disagree, I say keep the line with Telkom as its much easier to change ISP's then and you have more control over everything.

I have NEVER had a problem with my ISP where they tried to blame Telkom. Not something I have heard happening often either.

I almost put my DSL line through with WebAfrica although when placing the order I already had issues and it was quicker and easier for me to take the line directly from Telkom and pay a bit extra per month. I am much happier with this actually. I got my ADSL line from Telkom within 2 days (was activated lunch time on the 2nd day).
With WebAfrica I had already been waiting a while as they were unable to get Telkom to close my still open telephone line order and insisted I deal with Telkom to try and get it resolved. :erm:

So if you never had a problem with your ISP...why are you so worried about changing them?

I see your point. Anyone know what the self install option with Telkom's ADSL involves? I'll definitely do it myself if I save R790!

As is ours on 4Mbps. ;)

And you're unshaped on our uncapped account for the first 100 gigs. Shaping is only applied thereafter, and only to very large downloads. Gaming, streaming, browsing and most other protocols are completely unaffected day and night, and we release the large downloads shaping outside of peak periods as well.

Most of our customers are effectively unshaped all of the time. There's a sign-up link at the bottom of each product box on our site http://www.crystalweb.co.za/ and you can talk to one of our agents 24 hours per day Monday to Friday or 10am to 5pm on weekends.

Happy to help you get signed up with the right account for you if need be.
