A question re. slow UL speeds

I just received a call from a very friendly engineer at Nokia-Siemens-Networks, who is investigating the problem.

I have given him FTP details and also set up a mailbox for testing purposes.

Keeping my fingers crossed ... ;)
 
UL speeds

the uplinks speed are always slow.... oh well we live in a country with companies who need real compention so they can bite the bullet. will never happen just get use to vodacom's S**TTY service it will never change. MTN, CELLC, VIRGIN, TELKOM, MULTICHOICE there all the same..... well at home i have full 3G signal get a full 1800 downlink and a very low 20 uplink. at this other business in town who uses V3G/HSDPA gets there full 3600 DL speed but a terrible 18.5 UL speed (if you ask me VC don't want to allow users to use VoIP) as for HSUPA wonder what speed you will get there maybe a wonderful 56. now i was told by Vodacom they don't find a problem... oh well what's new VC your the problem. just like the day i phoned 10212 and reported telkom faulty in general and the rep did it! i got a ref number and everything very dumb people working in high places i think.....

Please run a speedtest on the Vodacom speed server and post the result.

I got this in Midrand a day or so ago:

Download Speed: 4225 kbps (528.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1069 kbps (133.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

At home in Cape Town, outside of official coverage, I normally get about 1400/1200.

Was not aimed at you. Just that our broadband in this country is sick.... plus i know vodacom are held back by telkom's poor network there is nothing VC can do about it.

used the http://speed.vodacom.co.za test.

Speed test done at a company i know with Linksys 3G router, Huawei E630, and HSDPA 7.2/HSUPA 1.4 enabled. (No other machine connected but mine) and 50% signal strenght, cell: Vryheid Industrial.

i also know that the Huawei E630 does NOT support HSUPA.

Downlink: 2004 kbps (perfect for what is required)
Uplink: 92 kbps (horrible)

Downlink: 1100 kbps (OK)
Uplink: 158 kbps (terrible)

Been very sweet here in Norwood but no idea how you got 4225kbps in Midrand the other day v3g!!

I put the 7.2mbps drivers on my E220 but it hasn't made a huge difference as I'm not sure I was hitting the roof at 3.6mb all that often. So in effect the roof is higher at 7.2mbps but I'm not hitting nearly that high while 4225kbps is impressive. How does one attain those speeds? Is it a setting?

Those uplinks are obviously not lekker.

Do some speedtest to the speedtest.net servers in JHB, NY and London and let's see how it compares.

Also, please update your location field so we know where you are. :)

You need to be on the 7.2 profile before you'll see speeds in excess of 3.6. But it's not commercially available yet (i.e. you can get it yet), so my posts are just a teaser now and then on what you *could* get if the backhaul was in place.

Seen sustained 5Mb/s+ quite a few times and in the high 6's every now and then.
 
Ok updated my location. i also listed the Base Stations in the speed test post.

Did you not know DNS stand for Did Not Show....:rolleyes:

Can you give a bit more info on what you see re the DNS servers? Do you get DNS timeouts, can you use another DNS server and then it works, etc?

If i use openDNS it all ok but slow!

The VC DNS times out a lot. and sometimes i have to disconnect and reconnect to get going. i have put them in manualy. i have also tried the internetVPN APN and it worse then the internet APN. i have logged a ticket with 155 they phone back and said they do not find any problems in my area. i think it the number of 3G users in Vryheid now. because i sign up atleast 5 a week now a days. they would rather go 3G then ADSL these days. excuss spelling i am tired.

I'm provisioned for 3.6mb and paying the R49 premium for that service.... But yes the highest I've ever achieved here was around 2700kbps...:(

signal is 100%

On a 1.8 profile??? i tried it twice. i am using a ppdb not my contract sim.

But DNS still times out

Does the winter weather in CT affect the signal at all and will upgrading my modem increase my speeds.
Another question.
What matters most for online gaming, u/l or d/l because most of the times my u/l speeds are around 330 kbps but sometimes it drops to 100 kbps and that is where i find my problems online.I get full five bars but it seems slower with more lag.

I presently have an e220 modem(contract sim) which says connected at 7.2 Mbps for work and an e620 in a router(pre paid sim) with a poynting antenna for gaming which is connected at 3.6Mbps.

Only saw this thread now, i have exactly the same upload issues as Steinie, speed tests show towards 384kbps upload but sending from Gmail via Outlook never goes above 8.5KB/s
 
HCC - Apologies for the delay in replying but have been out of the office for most of the week.

I had a look at the preformance of the sites in Vryheid and could not find any evident problem. Keep an eye on it and if the problem re-occurs, pm me and I will see if we can find anything.

It sounds like that sim must be set for a 3.6 profile as the realistic max on the 1.8 profile would be around 1.6 down and 350k up. If you would like me to check it, PM me the number and I will confirm for you. Maybe do a comparitive throughput test between the contract and the prepaid sims.

I found out i was actually still on the 1.8 package even though Vodacom sent a sms saying 3.6 had already been activated. The minute the sms came through saying Rxx.xx would be deducted from my account my speeds jumped and are more consistent

I think is time for a poll! on Vodacom 3G HSDPA 1.8 Uplink and Downlink speeds plus what times you have problem. Also the HSPA 1.4/3.6 Speeds & time problems???? could we do this IC please then see the true number.

I've seen this numerous times. Even on my 3G card which is a Huawei E272. What I usually do is connect, run a speedtest, if the upload is below 64kbps, disconnect and reconnect and check the speedtest again. It mostly all the time jumps up to 1200kbps upload.

Now I've seen the same thing on a Huawei E620 before. But disconnecting and reconnecting did not help that time.

So I wasn't sure if it was a Huawei hardware problem or something else...like the network not fully compatible with the Hauwei hardware.

Anyway, for a fact, I know my E272 card does it each and every time I connect it to my computer. I've tried another E272 and a different SIM card and the EXACT same thing happens. So I'm kinda at a loss, but the quick fix for me - connect - disconnect - connect.
