A Service For The Privileged Few

Hi folks

Just a quick correction: In my presentation I showed that the cost for a 30 GB unshaped connection is R 3940-00. The R7208/month comes from my previous ICASA presentation. The relative costs between SA and Egypt as well as the GDP per capita percentages also come from the previous presentation. Having said this it is still fairly accurate…

This is still a nice article by Larry and an interesting take on what transpired at the hearings.

The full MyADSL presentation is available here: http://www.mydrive.co.za/

In Telkom’s defence, wholesale marketing executive John Joseph said DSL rental fees had fallen every year since the service was launched.

Bulls****. They started off by charging for a Rolls Royce, while providing a mini. They then dropped their price and charged for a Merc SLK, while still only providing a mini!! In the fast pace of the internet, that mini is now worth an OX- wagon and has left us in the dust, when compared to those we compete against! Larry Classen should know better than to try and balance his article with crap like this!!

Joseph says Telkom’s prices are considered high because it has to recoup the cost of its capital investment for extending the service.
This is another misnomer that Telkom continues to spread. Their actions speak louder than these words. They are trying to recoup this capital cost in 2-3 months, when their counterparts offshore recoup these costs over much longer time frames. AND after recouping the costs do we see line rental being scrapped? NO They continue rapping their customers.
In addition if Telkoms' maths is correct then why are we being charge these ridiculous prices compared with rest of the world.

He says depreciation should be calculated over the entire network, which is constantly being upgraded.
More BULL****. Why should the Voice customers be subsidized by the data customers. If the network was being continually upgraded the Telkom should have the ability to offer 5-8 MBPS at the very least, let alone try and keep up with their counterparts offshore.

Telkoms PR response to the uproar of its pathetic appearance at the latest hearings is once again a negative approach instead of a positive. They will never wins hearts and minds with this propaganda.

My greatest fear is that we as the complainant community may be getting "Telkom Fatigue" and letting them get away with this. We need an injection of energy and a total new campaign to squeeze Telkom and Goverment into action. Surely we cannot continue with this status quo?

www.dslprime.com, was talking of Alcatel supplying DSLAM's, ports and ADSL modems at aound $47 (sub R350) last year in quantities of a million.

Considering the line is already there and the techies are only hooking the DSLAM up to the ATM network and provisioning the cabling, I think the R354.39 install cost, more than covers the capex cost to Telkom.

A thaught though, perhaps the idiots at Telkom are correct and need to recoup costs because they appear to be buying 1 port at a time, based on the ADSL backlog.

If we were paying for the equipment then dslams telkom uses is made of platinum ;) But yeah Why should the consumer pay for equipment big% more expensive than if we each saved our money and built our own mini networks. If the municipalities could do it and save alot of money in 1 yr, how can they justify charging what they do continually?

"But Icasa councillor Mamodupi Mohlala, who chaired the hearings, was not prepared to let Telkom escape. She asked it to produce a letter explaining to Icasa how it planned to bring down prices and gave it seven days to do so"

Yeah right seven day! i love to see that happen, most likely nothing will happen! again

Angry With Service

   I believe that telkom has the worst possible service available to man on this earth.

I personally have been the victum of this abuse.

Story:
Ordered adsl beginning of last month.

Contact them to make sure line test was done.... to find out they had not done it and it was done the next day which i can take as a mistake.

Contacted them to find out when installation would be done.... to find out that they couldnt give me a time till it was going to actually be done.

So i phone and phone and phone and phone.... eventually after 2 weeks i get an installation date of the 24th of may.
24th comes and goes and nothing happens.
I contact them the next day they said they would escalate it.
I ask them to get somone to talk to me and find out what went wrong... i even said i dont mind a date change as long as i konw when its going to happen be it 3 days or a week. (resonable that i am  )
This goes on for 7 days of me calling them on a constant basis to find out whats going on..... i eventually get so mad i cant pick up the fone cause i would be thrown in jail for the words that i would say tothem.

So i pick up the phone and call customer service.
The lady on the other side helps me out and tells me she will get back to me.... konwing telkom i didnt expect a phone call. but to my disbelief she contacted me back and got her supervisor to call me also..... nonetheless im still waiting for a new date and the technitians to contact me to install my line.......

is this the type of service they offer its best to assume they dont want business from the users.
Im so angry with them its not even funny and i dont know how to get hold of somone that can actually pick up the phone and make ppl jump.
0800456786 is useless and pathetic
Supervisors there are hopeless as they never there and dont answer their phones.

I am NOT HAPPY WITH TELKOM AND IM GOING TO MAKE THEM FEEL IT BADLY BY PROVIDING THE INDUSTRY WITH THE CHANGE TO SNO WHEN IT HAPPENS.

They say two weeks, that is actually 2x30 days. in about 60 days after applying.... if you lucky. You can try and phone the compition board, not that is going to help much tho....

i Might as well go scratch the lions balls with a toothpick.
It will be more usefull then phoning teklom again

well well,

i just got a call from telkom saying they going to install line tomorrow morning now...... this is interesting indeed.

as soon as i posted things started happening.... makes you wonder doesnt it

snoopy_inc: Standard practice of Telkom, when I read your threat, it sounded familiar,I applied a year ago for ADSL and I also phoned 0800456786 to find out when they will install it and could get an installation date, stopped phoning them and gave it up as a hopeless case, was not in the mood to phone them again to cancel everything and hope that they will do it for me as they took so long and after 3 months they phone me to make an appointment for installation.

Well as a point to point out.....

0800600126 = customer service.... they have direct numbers to the adsl head of department number.... they actually get things done... .they installing my line tomorrow now..

Toke them 2 days to get it done. toke me 7 days to swear and perform to finally try the customer service number....

ADSL is definitely a service for the privileged few. As is electricity and motor vehicles.

I think that the playing fields need to be levelled and this can be done by banning any service or device invented or implemented after 3,000,000 years BC. This includes all medicines and medical procedures which are not purely manual not using any device and only use onions and garlic.

That would allow all persons to start at the same level of disadvantage.

I recently got iBurst because I did not want to deal with Telkomonopoly. ADSL is technically better (no pesky latency problems) but iBurst is painless in comparison to the above. Just sign the cheque for the modem and you're up and running. They even deliver.

In Telkom’s defence, wholesale marketing executive John Joseph said DSL rental fees had fallen every year since the service was launched.
Nonsense. If it was so, then ADSL would be much cheaper by now. Prove it. The last so-called "price reductions" made it more EXPENSIVE instead of CHEAPER.

Critics point out that the company is dragging its feet on price reductions. Telkom chief sales & marketing officer Wally Beelders promised a detailed announcement on price cuts by the end of March. So far, Telkom has not made any announcements. Market talk is that one could be made next weekend.

True, we are still waiting. What happened to said report? Did it got lost somewhere, or is it still jammed inside a printer?

oseph says Telkom’s prices are considered high because it has to recoup the cost of its capital investment for extending the service. The company’s regulatory affairs GM, Gabriel Celli, dismisses suggestions that DSL should be cheaper because Telkom is using its existing voice infrastructure to provide the service. He says depreciation should be calculated over the entire network, which is constantly being upgraded.

Now, now, now... this does NOT make sense at all. Telkom recently announced that they would be upgrading their entire network, at which news the price of their shares dropped. If they've been upgrading their network constantly, then there would've been no need to announce that they're planning to upgrade their network... it just doesn't make sense to upgrade something which have already been upgraded.

Same feelings here. No more stressing for me, it is over and done with.

Customer-centric? Prove it by actions and not words.
Cheaper prices? Prove it by actions and not words.

Enough for now... it's Friday, so I'm off for a nice weekend... :D

*I personally have been the victum of this abuse.* shame snoopy_inc. bad luck hey... but theres abuse and then theres abuse ;)
