Our daughter phoned her mommy now via skype from the USA and they spoke for 2 hours and during this time i could not log onto the internet.

i kept getting an erratic signal, one minute its there and the next it was gone and now that the call is over it seems more stable now.

what was happening here?

Skype uses ENCRYPTED AUDIO remember so the pull on your CPU,etc is going to be great.... Im on Win98se and i used to run skype and man when i was in a VOICE CHAT,my computer would bog right down!! (Then again i only have 56m of ram (8 shared with monitor (64m))

the thing is they were talking on the laptop in the lounge and i am on the desktop in the entertainment room. we are connected by a cable.

i think you call it a lan cable so its from the hub to the laptop, so can the skype in one room affect the internet/adsl line in another room?

You've only got one ADSL line coming into the home right?
So yes it would.

Why not try Google Talk - not as bandwidth intensive as Skype and more audible in the times I've used it.
