Above average intelligence

Um... Yes, so reading the book lets you understand the basics of maths and all other things in life. But that's education... Hence why the SA IQ is so low, we have a poor education system. Books don't make you intelligent, I mean, if they did then I must have read a lot of books... However, what books do is give your mind something to grasp, something to understand. It's a very well known fact that when someone understands something, they can always come back to it when the raw information is lost, but you can sit down and go over it... You giving yourself something to understand, and understanding is linked to IQ because a higher IQ should mean someone understands things more intuitively, or spend less time on grasping the work. It's the same with EQ (emotional quotient), are you going to argue that this is in books too!?

Yes, a person who is educated will score better, but they don't ask you what the string theory is and prove it mathematically in an IQ test. It's usually simple things like pythag's theory, and a lot of things where you have to understand simple things and reorder them in your mind, which is a good indicator of intelligence because people whom are mentally dull will struggle to draw links and reconfigure the information that is supplied, and then generate the answer from that, thus will take longer or not understand the question/give wrong answer.

It's not in the books you silly man :p, books are a tool for education, not a holy grail for intelligence :p.

no, they include the time per question in the IQ score.
I'm sure there are tests out there that adjust for time taken per question, but classic ones don't. You get a large enough sample of taken test, set the average correct raw score to 100 IQ points & map the rest via standard deviations. The only thing they adjust for is age afaik.

You can't have a person sit on a question for an hour now can you :p.
You could, but then you don't finish the test within the time limit and you get an IQ of 5.

They basically time you, when you finished, they dived the time by the number of questions to give you an average.
In which case you end up tainting the results w/ reading speed, impulsiveness etc

Hmmm, fair enough, but I've read some calculations where they time you... I could be wrong, I used to be interested in IQ a few years ago, so my memory has grown vague :p.

I wouldn't mind getting an IQ of 5, well, duffing the test so that's my score :p, would be awesome being the dumbest person in the world :p.

I dislike being told I'm intelligent, no one has proof of this fact then their own assumptions. I'd rather do something exceptional and prove to myself I'm pretty good at something than rely on the gospel according to everyone else.

are you saying everyone is getting dumber?

Also, IQ's are highly subjective. If you've been educated and know that way of thinking, then you more likely to have an 'above average' intelligence. However, you can still be intelligent and just score low on the IQ test because you don't know things like like how to read and write ;).

Good Grief! Are you SURE you're only fifteen? Pretty astute for a kid, if I may say so in the politest way ....

Me.

I'm also left-handed, have an above average penis size, enjoy long walks on the beach, moonlit picnics and meaningful overnight relationships. Anything else?

i lol'ed

I don't understand? I'm turning 20 this year, unless you trying to point out that I'm actually just a smart 15 yo, ie: a stupid 20 yo? I don't see what the eff you trying to get to, but I already and see I don't like it.

IQ was 154, but decades of laziness have probably taken thier toll :(

IQ possibly indicates potential, but frankly I've met more mensa wannabees who think they are very smart than what should be the norm, especially people with excellent memory (parrot) skills who don't have a clue what the data they've stored means, or those who are unable to integrate the data into the whole for improved understanding.

I don't take the idea of high or low IQ too seriousely, but nurturing and encouraging the neural tree to form branches and grow is something I do aspire to. In the end it all depends what you do with your potential.

:erm: maybe she really thought you were 15?

Come now, that would be naive. I would have been 10/11 years old when I joined the form then. My birth date is clearly visible on my profile if you aren't sure, and doesn't this forum have an age restriction of 18 and onwards?

having a bad day?

no man...by being able to solve math problems somewhere along the line in your life you HAD to read some books about math...agreed?

So by that conclusion we can also then conclude that...intellegence stems from reading...in "Those Days" they had a provocative saying...if you want to keep something hidden froma black man, hide it in a book...that is a provocative statement that took time to develop...ppl generally don't read books, if you find that your IQ test is 500 then you must also evaluate your life...while others watch idols you read boosk on quantom theory for fun...thus, the book plays in integral part in your supposed high IQ or above avg. intellegence...can we get an amen on that?

You have never had your IQ tested, if you had you would know they don't ask general knowledge questions at all.
As for maths, you only really need to know how to add, subtract, divide, multiply and square root.

Terrible. :o.

Just remember that its Rammstein in 1 sleep...and all will be well..

with regards to above average intelligence, this is absolutely useless without a work ethic.

Im not a dumb guy, but my grades sucked all the way through high school. I under achieved my entire life and have only just recently (last 3 years or so) started to get somewhere decent. Where I have had every opportunity, I think the fact that I thought I was supposed to be really good at things actually screwed me up. I became afraid of failure, and therefore never put in any effort (always saying, sure, I could do that if I tried). It was kinda the cool "in" thing at school and even at varsity..the guy who didnt care and never worked but still passed. It backfired badly when I saw just how tough the workplace can be

I have a friend who is about average in intelligence, and yet he is truly kicking ass in life. No matter what bar you use to measure success, he would score highly. I guess my point is this, make sure you do the best with what you are given. Dont spend your time wishing you were smarter, taller etc or proving you are smarter than others. Benchmarking yourself against others, especially on things you cannot change, is gonig to make you miserable!

I couldn't agree more. I went through school scraping by. I was getting 50% average in grade 7 :p. ha ha. I'd consider myself as average intelligence, but then in matric I brought the fury. I started to develop study methods that worked for me, I pulled out the stops and get a really high goal for myself. I soon started to see the amount I could achieve with a positive attitude, and nice high goals. I left matric with 3 distinctions in the subjects I wanted to get distinctions in (Maths, Science and Geog).

I walked into engineering, being the under dog because I didn't do maths paper 3, or add maths. But I knew what I could achieve, and I thrashed my first year engineering :). I also partied hard, because prior matric, I'd be out the whole weekend partying getting a drunk etc. Then in matric I needed to work, but I needed to have my social life too. So I made both work, which I carried through into uni. So I kinda had a nice understanding of work and play. I even went for a few drinks two days before my maths exam because I knew it'll be a good boost to my work ethic. My maths marks when up 5% in me finals engineering exam :D, while a lot of my other friends locked themselves inside and tried to study the days away.

Work ethic, IQ and socializing are all extremely important, and when you start to get them all working together, then I think you can outweigh anyone with a very strong one of those. As for my bad mood, just parent issues :p. You just can't look the other way without them doing something stupid these days :p.

OK I'll drop the attempt at humour, and retract just a fraction. Your quote that I hilighted WAS astute - This one? Not so much :{

Oh? Sorry, I didn't see any humour in your post, in fact, it looks like sarcasm in it's purest form... Hence why I didn't take it well :p. Sorry, I also had a little scuffle with Kage a week ago because I thought it was a personal attack :p. (ps, if you trying to be funny, please make use of the smilies faces. It makes it easier to read when you implying humour) :).

I'm really sorry, just been a stressful few days and been edgy with everything :o.
