Some Absa clients have been informed that a staff member of the bank shared their information with third parties.

“Absa advises that an employee has unlawfully made selected customer data available to a small number of external parties,” a spokesperson told Business Insider. “The leaked data relates to a small portion of Absa South Africa’s customer base, although investigations continue.”

It has been contacting affected Absa clients directly, and has increased monitoring of their accounts.

Absa suffers data breach Absa has suffered a data breach affecting a number of its clients, exposing their personal information to external parties. The bank sent an email to affected clients on Monday 30 November, warning them that their personal information had been shared with third parties.

The data on these devices was subsequently destroyed.


Absa has brought criminal charges against the employee, and says it launched “the requisite consequence management” in response to the data leak.

What an odd way to handle evidence.
 
Remember when laying a complaint to the banking ombudsman about your account having fraud and absa says you didn't protect your login details, point them to this article. Especially when there are sim swap shenanigans involved.

so much for the POPI act, toothless apparently

this kind of nonsense will never stop until it hurts the bank when it happens, not just the PR and this "we're sorry" garbage, but really hurts, financially

in the USA when you're responsible for a data breach you have to buy identity theft insurance for every single individual who's data was compromised ... at ±$50 a pop a large breach can actually bankrupt a company just from the insurance obligation, guess what, they take breaches seriously

I know a few absa people who were made redundant and then their jobs were later advertised with bee requirements. Suppose they needed to meet quotas? After years and years of service. Africanacity! Toyota did it too iirc.
