Absa

I moved to FNB from ABSA and hadn't looked back once. Can really recommend going to the FNB unlimited option.

Thanks for this post.. Have just moved my cheque account to FNB.. Still waiting to hear from them if they have the equivalent of the ABSA Investment advantage account so that I can move that as well..

Thank goodness I don't have debt.. If they annoy me this way without me owing them anything, I would hate to be liable to them!

I would suggest going to specialist for investment banking. I have a Cadiz Money Market unit trust and it does quite well (better than ABSA according to MorningStar).

Everytime I talk to ABSA, I make a point of reminding them that they are -

1. mediocre; and
2. greedy and;
3. in actual fact my employee/s because I contribute to their salaries with my service fees.

:D

Blapsa = :rolleyes:

Here's hoping the recession will force all the major a$$reamers to lower their fees and the such...

I have done the same thing Bondizzo.. Keeping my investment advantage account as FNB cannot offer me a better account in that regard..

CC are bad I agree but if you can manage to not go into debt they are quite useful. Lib what temptations did you guys get? Was it food/electronics/relaxation ...?

Or they can be called Gapsa :)
One other major benefit of FNB is offcourse Ebucks!!!! We regularly spend that on some nice cd's / dvd's, and off course, you can even shop at Makro! Major bonus IMO. Having bond and vehicle finance with them as well helps increase ebucks quick.

Cancelled our bond with ABSA over 4 years ago, never even had a single call from them asking why...

It is crazy the way they charge.. I am quite keen to hear how much they are refunding and how far back they are going.. I only moaned about from July.. If they pay me back fees from the whole 2008 year I will consider not cancelling my account.. However if they only give me back from July, I will take my refund and still cancel the cheque account..

I have to drive to Stellenbosch to sign for it, and have a feeling my refund is going to be less than my petrol.. lol..

Dump them immediately. If they have to make you jump through hoops then they don't deserve you as customer. You will save on banking charges if you move to FNB - whether there were a mistake or not. How can ABSA justify a "minimum service charge" of R30 if the total banking costs are in the hundreds???? I know their fine print says minimum service charge if you don't write checks... but still!

ABSA have a facility for paying traffic fines.
Only noticed it on the weekend.

Pretty sure I'll be making use of it.:o:o

Yes I have already moved my debit orders across to FNB and my salary details, but just would feel terrible if they refund me for a year and I cancel anyway..

They don't refund you because they try to be nice BTW - they are trying to avoid bad publicity. Besides - they are not giving you a "gift". That was your money anyway! Take it and leave them!

Read the Finweek study! They increased their banking fees by around 32% year-on-year. I moved to FNB after I realised I am paying three times more than FNB would charge me! I am saving around R1800 annually! That is a lot of money!!!! I am getting better service! I am earning more ebucks (in Rand value) than I am paying in bank charges! ABSA is ripping people off and relying on the ignorance of the population!

Exactly why I started making waves there.. I got a letter from them saying that since I am such a great and "valued" client, they are pleased to let me know I can have total banking fees of R135.

I wanted to reply very sarcastically and say how great that is, that they are now only charging me 60 percent more than FNB is offering and not the 400 percent they have been charging me for the last year..

Thanks for the post.. Needed that! Was weakening there for a second.. haha

wa ha, just spoken to ABSA who is only refunded me R170 for this month. They say all the other months I did not query it, so it goes through as is.. So in other words ABSAs policy is: " We will pilfer money out of your account and if you don't notice the joke is on you".

The fact that they are refunding more than 50% shows that they have been over charging in a big way the entire time.. Sharks!

Edit: Oh and they tried to sell me a credit card .. can you believe it.

Makes one :sick:

We calculated that our total banking fees (IIRC) with Blapsa was R230 pm - R2760 per year. (that was when we were still using Absa).

With Wizzit it's less than R100 per month banking fees. So we're saving R1560 just by using a cheaper bank.

Exactly! My bank fees with FNB will be R66, and with ABSA I was at R302 for October..

Feeling a bit silly now with a Virgin Credit Card, ABSA investment account and FNB cheque account..
