AC Ryan Playon HD!

So I've got my AC Ryan Playon HD. Am I the first on here? ;)

Time to unbox it and play! I also got the wifi adapter.

I'll give feedback as I progress. All very new to me so if someone has one feel free to share advice/tips etc.
 
Wow! That was fast!

I just saw them; look great! Which one did you get (with or without the hard drive)?

Feel free to give an account of what does and doesn't playback, and contact me if you'd like a broad range of small files to test :D

I went for the full unit (not the mini which does not take hard drives) but I did not get the hard drive (although the 1Tb drive at only an extra R500 excl was tempting!) as I already had a 1Tb drive sitting waiting.

Great stuff! I can't wait to hear how this thing does, because it's REALLY tempting!

Oh, and you can get hard drives for REAL cheap now anyway... Bought my 2 TB last week for R0.57 per GB :D
 
So the mini has the same functionality just no harddrive?

It seems so... They all support external USB drives, though. Not sure about supported filesystems? Hopefully NTFS or similar is supported. FAT32 is a real killer for big files :(

The price for one ;)

I am lead to believe that the AC Ryan will recognise optical drives connected via USB. Not sure if the Mede8er does so. Also not sure if the Mede8er supports YAMJ yet but I think the AC Ryan does. I'll be sure to test it.
 
This looks very tempting but i guess the ps3 will do for now. I think its a great buy.

The one thing I have noted in my research is that the mini does not have a media card reader like the full one does.

The mini also has no fan as there is no hard drive to cool.

As an aside, and again I cannot talk for the Mede8er but this unit comes with an HDMI cable included in the many accessories.There are five cables in total (excluding the power cable)

It supports NTFS as the default... and all the other File Systems.
 
Well I didn't get time to do much testing of my own as the LOs wanted to watch something so I now have "Shaun the Sheep" streaming wirelessly from my laptop to the Playon!HD.... It connected to my wireless router in a jiffy and all shared documents on the various computers were available on the menu.

Great to see the built in screensaver so no worries about accidental burn in on my plasma. I'm using HDMI to connect for the first time and even though it is not an HD movie I have on I am almost certain the quality looks far superior than it did before.

So is this a contender to the mede8er? If I had known about this unit 2 weeks back I very well might have bought it instead of the mede8er (but only cause the price is ++). So far I must say I'm happy with the mede8er, fine piece of kit that!
 
LancelotSA, where did you get the PlayOn!? I am looking at the PlayOn! DVR for a friend who is looking at the Verbatim MediaStation HD, but I'd rather want him to get the PlayOn! DVR since it is much better supported.

As far as I am aware the Mede8er is a copy of the AC Ryan. The AC Ryan units have been around for a while longer.

I got it from Esquire. They are advertised on this board. They are on an introductory special at the moment.
