so i downgraded from premium yesterday. i got tired of switching on and getting the same crap recycled. i diasabled the pvr functionality as well. before the software upgrade i could still watch what was on the harddrive. now you have no access to the previously recorded content.

its my effing decoder but i have no access to it because the mothership wants R65 before they give me access to my decoder. bastids. that R65 is a BS charge anyway. you pay for your pvr but you have to pay them so that you can use it. we consumers put up with alota crap in this country. does anybody know if there is an access fee for that Tivo thing that you get in america? or anywhere else for that matter.

and before you expound the 'but you disabled pvr access' song, its my effing harddrive so i should have access to the stuff currently on it. i own the pvr but its not actually mine. everybody leases it from monochoice.

/end rant

Yes there is, it got quite expensive think something like $12 per month, and when you end the subscription then you could not access the local stored content. when they began you could get a lifetime subscription, wonder what happened with that.

From their contract:
7. Your TiVo DVR Won't Work Without the TiVo Service! A subscription to the TiVo service is required in order for your TiVo DVR to have any functionality. No functionality is represented or should be expected from the TiVo DVR without a paid subscription to the TiVo service.

total BS. so you never really own it since you are dependent on the service provider to get access to the content.

Yep and that is why I built my own box, (mythtv) Relying on other websites for schedules and info is a bit of a pain and requires some tweaking now and then. At least my content doesn't magically vanish :)

so you running that on top of your content i presume. mythtv = xmbc? might go down that route as well.

Yes running it on my current content. mythtv, xmbc or one of the myriad others out there, you need to choose. My mythtv box is about 7 years old, feel no need to upgrade/change anything on it.

Of course you never really own it, you are renting the privilege of being able to record the shows/movies for later watching. Imagine if you could get that many movies for R65 a month, madness.

But you paid the rental for the relevant period. Why can't u access the content you paid for?

Your decoder. Their content.
Your consumption of their content is if course subject to their Ts&Cs.

Of course I sympathize.

But trying to argue with them will get you nowhere. You're a number to them, and a very small one at that. Just like the rest of us.

There are technical workarounds, but that's hardly the point.

Noob alert - I'm about to become a dstv subscriber for the first time, just used regular mnet and vhs all these years.

Is there an easy to find list of what the R65 pvr does actually for you?

I know better than to waste breath on air stealers.

We can still access recorded content on our PVR at the office and we cancelled. I think the trick is to disconnect the dish cables.

Record, play, box office - additional money, on demand, think that's it?

Interesting. But I still have compact package.

And the last software upgrade I think changed this.

my solution is a 3th party decoder with a 1TB harddrive at the usb port. it is a atemio 510. it works with the new dstv premium smartcards at the backside smartcardreader. you can use the pvr function without paying the 65,- rand extra. when you want the HD channels then you have to pay the extra 65,- . a big + is the network capability, so you have the extras like a smart TV.

Nope HD is free, the 65 rand is for pvr and xtraview.

I regularly take my PVR along to a holiday home where we have no satellite dish, and can still access the recorded content. So I think if you were to disconnect the cables before you cancelled you'd still be able to watch the recorded content, although you obviously wouldn't be able to use the PVR for viewing your current bouquet then.

Dude i agree f--k them the pvr with all t contents on the hd is ure property.someone should challenge it in court.same happened 2 me
