I have an encrypted external HDD, and for some reason, SQL cant access a database that's on the mounted partition at all. I have to copy it out onto my Internal HDD before SQL can access the database.

Is there a way to do this?
Or should I start looking for a new encryption software?

Have you tried accessing the SQL DB from an unencrypted external drive? There are some "issues" with that too, but after some fiddling you generally get it to work [mounting/dismounting the DB in SQL Server and things like that]. Sometimes you need to backup/restore instead of mount/dismount the DB....[i.e. you backup the DB, restore it to the external drive]

Jip. That's how we used to do it. But I should probably mention that this problem is SQL 2008 specific. We had no issues whatsoever with 2005.

As much as TrueCrypt simulates a real partion it is not... There are a bunch of quirks..

PS why would you be running a database of an external ?

I'm not too clear on where you are encountering your problem.

I am running TrueCrypt 6.2 to encrypt an entire partition. So long as I mount the partition successfully, I can run all my SQL 2008 databases from that mounted drive. Obviously I don't start up SQL until I have mounted the encrypted partition with it's usual drive letter.
